No CUDA in DVR17 with Nvidia quadro k4200

PostTue Jan 26, 2021 9:49 am

Hello, I recently joined this forum because it is useful for reporting hardware or software anomalies, and in fact I would like to report a problem that I was unable to solve. In the meantime, I apologize for my English, because I am writing to you from Rome and therefore I am using the google translator hoping you can understand me.
So I come straight to the point. I have been using DVR for 3 years using versions 15 and now 17. I have an Nvidia Quadro k4200 graphics card which works very well and which up to version 16 of the DVR had no problems with CUDAs.

In fact, in the preferences it allowed me to choose CUDA or OPEN CL. I state that I have the Studio version of Da Vinci Resolve. But now in version 17 I have no way to choose CUDA because it always remains in OPEN CL. I have installed updated drivers and also the most popular ones but I still have OPEN CL always. I even thought it was a defect of the video card but it is not because reinstalling the DVR 16 version makes me choose CUDA.
I thought that maybe it depends on the fact that the version 17 of DVR being a Beta version and therefore not definitive could depend on this fact. Or will my Nvidia Quadro K4200 graphics card no longer be supported? Waiting for your reply, I offer my cordial greetings and forgive me for my not perfect Ingelse. Thank you very much!

Resolve 16.2.7 and 17 use CUDA 11. This requires Nvidia GPUs to have a minimum Compute Capability of 3.5. The k4200 only has a Compute Capability of 3.0. Without a GPU upgrade you will only get CUDA in Resolve version 16.2.6 or earlier which use CUDA 10.

In the meantime, thank you so much for your reply where I understood and everything is clear to me. I'm sorry that I can't use this card with DVR 17. So the only solution is to buy a new latest generation card that supports the latest versions of CUDA. In fact I could see on the internet that there is not even an updated version of the firmware of my card. Do you think that a final version of DVR 17 can run my card or is it now obsolete? Thank you again for your response and availability. I wish you a good day! :-)

A firmware update is not going to change the CUDA Compute 3.0 capability of your K4200 card.

Which means it is not going to properly work with Resolve 16.2.7 or higher.

It will work fine in Resolve 16.2.6 and earlier.

For Resolve 17, you are going to need a better graphics card.

Just bought DVR17 Studio and am in trouble finding an affordable low-to-mid-range GPU to upgrade my PC, that could smoothly work with DVR 17 for non-demanding editing in 4k. Would be grateful for any suggestion. Kind regards.

At the moment, a whole lot of us are stuck waiting for the RTX 3000 cards to become available again.

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Yes, the GPU market is a mess.
Maybe they are all on that freighter which blocked the Suez channel? Or going around Africa? Or ending up in the virtual mines?

I wanted to suggest the humble Radeon 580 with 8 GB VRAM, but even second-hand it became more than twice as expensive than what I paid last year.

So, patience and stick to HD for the time being.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you so much for your advice. It is a hard time for buying GPUs and even worse waiting for Bitcoins to drop in value and release GPUs back to normal use. I found a second-hand Nvidia Quadro P4000 (€ 900) card that appears to be more performant than Mr.Salvi's K4200. However I am not technically capable to determine if it would be fit to edit 4k clips under DVR17 and sustain future updates of DVR17. CUDA and Compute Capability are foreign lingo to me. Could somebody please help me out making a sound decision? Thank you and best regards.

Hi all. I have an Nvidia Quadro k4200 and I loaded version 18. When I had problems, I read this post and then downloaded version 16. I have the latest version of the drive (474.30) which came out just a month ago. However, it does not recognize the CUDA of my card. What can I do?

In a File Explorer window, go to:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve

and run CaptureLogs

This will place a Resolve log file named similar to this on your Windows desktop: DaVinci-Resolve-logs-20181228_140434.zip (You may not see the .zip extension if your system is set to hide known extensions).

Then open Windows System Information and do a File - Save (Not a File Export), which will generate a .NFO file.

Place both those files on a file sharing site and provide links to the files here. Make sure the links don't require access credentials.

If you are a new Forum user, you may not be allowed to post URLs. If this happens, just put a space near the front of the URL, so the system doesn't think it's a URL.
