DR 19 Public Beta - Possible Media Management Bug

PostFri Apr 26, 2024 9:32 am

Re-posted here. Should be easy to reproduce.

Concerns: Edit page -> Media Management -> Clips -> Copy -> Used media and trim.

Setup: Mac Studio M1 Ultra 128GB RAM
MOV files recorded on Atomos Ninja, 4k HEVC, ~ 30Mb/s, 29.97fps
Around 15GB in size.

Procedure that works on Resolve 18.6

- Drop Video file onto new timeline, trim front and back
- Select video file (+ audio)
- Media Management -> Clips -> Copy
- Use: Selected timeline clips
- Copy: Used media and trim keeping 30 frame handles
- Use project name subfolder checked.
- Hit Start.
- Files copy to folder set in destination with the trims applied.

This same procedure in DR 19 Beta results in: Failed to copy "name_of_file_here"

Selecting Copy -> All media does work.

Yep - seeing this too with H265 clips created by my Ninja V. The same clips media managed in Resolve 18 just fine if memory serves. Maybe I'll post a sample clip for others to try. The clip was recorded from a Canon R6 in Rec2020/CLog3. I'll see if I can package up a sample archive.

Update

OK - created a short project archive with a single clip and a resolve log:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1LKW3eGgdUoz0r3NtYhJYJzqlB8NEGhSQ?usp=sharing

As with the OP, I simply selected the clip on the timeline and then use Media Management > Clip Copy > Selected timeline clips and then only used media with 24 frame handles. I directed this to my desktop. The copy creates the project name folder on the desktop but then fails to copy the clip. A straight copy works just fine (in other words, used media without handles).

This is with Resolve Studio 19b1 on my MacBook Pro under Sonoma 14.4.1 (see my signature).

I should also note that I tried this with the h265 material directly from my Canon R6 and it also failed miserably. This footage has always worked with previous versions of Resolve so something has really gone off the rails in this regard. Too bad because there have always been bugs in the media management and I'd hoped those would have been addressed by now but I can't test because not it doesn't work at all. I haven't tested with ProRes footage - that probably works. I'll report back if I can find some to test with.

Add - Yep - tested with several clips from my Ninja V recorded in ProRes from my Canon R6 and they media managed with trim without issue. Not surprising that an I-frame codec would work, but media management used to be able to work with the H265 footage I'm testing with and now in 19b1 it does not.

Confirmed, Prores 422 works. H265 doesn't. Thanks for checking it out.

At first I wondered if it was related to the particular H265 files created by the Ninja but it seems not. A step backwards in media management for sure.

Well, using Steve's project, it works fine for me on my M1 Pro 14.4.1 Mac.

Edit: Sorry, I was using a newer internal build. I see the issue with the release code.

So safe to say, the issue will be addressed in the next release.

Wow - did my Resolve logs show any indication of why it failed for me, Dwaine? Maybe it's an M1 Max / Ultra problem?

Certainly wasn't a problem in 18.x but I can't say I've tried it since moving to Sonoma 14.4.1. I guess I could roll-back to 18.6.6 to test if I get a chance.

Add - Ah - just saw your update, Dwaine, just after submitting the above response. Good to know!
