Video Not Displaying in 19b Build 25

PostTue May 14, 2024 1:29 am

I'm editing a concert video, all other clips from the concert load, view and edit except for this one. Would someone try loading this into their 19b and see if it's just me? Windows 11. Thank you!

It won't open here either. Looking at MediaInfo the variable frame rate could be the problem.

It loads and plays on a Mac under 18.6.6, but not in 19b2. I can hear the sound, though.
I'm surprised, though, that sync is holding pretty well in 18.6.6.

But I'd also assume VFR being the problem, it's pretty massive.
Smartphones are no serious video cameras (with one exception).
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

If it loads properly in 18.6.6 (on a Mac), perhaps this could be considered a bug for 19b?

Is it possible to have 18.6.6 installed on the same machine as 19b? Maybe I can do that.

Don’t. Make a separate boot system, or you may run into all kinds of issues.
If you only need it for this single clip, transcode into ProRes or another mezzanine codec with fixed fps.

Thanks Uli!

I appreciate your response.

I dropped back to 8.6.6 and checked the video using that version. It turned out the clip was "bad" for the first minute or so, then displayed correctly. I saved it as a project, upgraded to 19b, but the problem remained.

I then went back to 8.6.6, edited out the "bad" portion then rendered it to an MP4 file. Upgraded back to 19b then "imported media" and it's good. I only lost a little bit of the clip, I'm ok with that.

I'll investigate the mezzanine codecs you mentioned if this comes up again. I suspect the problem was a combo problem with the clip itself (VFR) and 19b.

You mentioned earlier in this thread, "Smartphones are no serious video cameras (with one exception)". Which exception were you thinking of?

Thank you again!

That was (mildly) ironic, since I'd assume that some other top-of-the-line smartphones might do well too. But an iPhone 15 Pro (or Max) is showing very small deviations from the chosen fps, far less than 1%, as long as you don't switch lenses while recording or activate massive stabilisation.

Anyway, the range of fps shown for the clip in question here was massive.
