Pixelation artifact

PostSun May 26, 2024 4:29 pm

Dear Blackmagic Design,

This bug has been in version 19 since the first release. So from Beta1-Beta3

There is a bug where the footage shows pixelation in the footage once imported. It is not present in the source on disk, if watched with a player. And the artifact stays on the exact frame that resolve generates the artifacts, as if it is in the source.

Same happens in the timeline with the media, except everytime you generate a cache for playback it creates the pixelation in different places, but keeps the one from the source bin in the same place.

Here is the link to the original file, so others can see it they get the same issue. Download the 4K (4096x2160) version.

Kind regards,
Robert

Thank you for taking the time to try the footage. I have many of the pexels files having the same issue.

This issue also shows up in the source vierwer. If I look at the file in the media tab, it has the artifacts. I go to my harddrive and opren the file. There are no artifacts.

See the edit page below.

Hello Robert,

I downloaded your test file and, on my MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019 8-Core i9 with 16 GB RAM using DaVinci Resolve 19.0 beta 3 and macOS 14.5, I did not observe any artifacts, neither as a source file nor on a timeline.

Thank you for also trying. So the crazy thing is I converted the source in adobe encoder to prores 422. Added it to the bin and then the timeline. The issue of the prores version is not there. But if I try to convert the h264 inside of Resolve (proxy proress 422) to the Prores 422, it bakes the artefacts into the resulting file.

I have been having the issue with all the files I have downloaded from pexels. This issue started with Version 19.

Although I believe it's a long shot, I would invite you to try the following: In the project settings, change the format from APR422 HQ to DNxHR HQX as shown in the specifications here. Does this make any difference regarding the artifacts in the image?

I recently resolved a similar issue with artifacts appearing when applying drop shadow effect to subtitles or using Text+ by doing this, so it might work for you as well.

You are not going to believe this. After I loaded in the prores file. The artifacts disapeared from the original file. As soon as I see it return, I will try your advise and post here.

Thank you for trying to help

Look into the GPU and/or driver for issues.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I was think about that. As my card is a AMD 580x
Something I just tried. I downloaded the not 4K version of another piece of footage and it works as suspected.

I have an iMac with AMD Radeon Pro 580 here, and that footage is playing without any issue in 19b3.
I'm afraid it's a GPU driver issue.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thank you for testing. The drivers are just simply the native mac OS drivers for the card that ventura installs. I am running the latest version.

Well, so I can't reproduce the issue here at all.
I even tested with an RX 580, which is in my eGPU, and switched DR to use that one only. This iMac is running Ventura 13.6.7 too. The only thing I can imagine now is a hardware issue. Please see if your card is properly seated, or even clean the contacts.
Oh, and you can check the temperature of the GPU with TG Pro (it has a trial period).
