Open FX Renderer?

PostFri Apr 12, 2024 8:58 pm

What is that? (Found in the studio installer)
(edit:)
Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer
plugin for Third Party Applications
The new Open FX plugin DaVinci Resolve Renderer allows third-party applications to open and
apply DaVinci Resolve’s color changes using exported DRX stills. This can be useful when round
tripping with various VFX authoring applications where you may want to maintain a look created
in DaVinci Resolve.
Exporting a DRX still contains much more information about the grade than a simple LUT. DRX
files can include data, like all the native color and sizing palettes, and other items you stored in
a Gallery still. This ensures that the grade the colorist created can be exactly replicated in the
VFX software.
As of this writing the following attributes WILL transfer
via the Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin:
‚ All native color palettes (Primaries, HDR, Curves, etc.)
‚ All native sizing palettes (Input, Output, Node, etc.)
‚ Most Resolve FX
‚ Most third-party Open FX
As of this writing the following attributes WILL NOT transfer
via the Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin:
‚ Resolve and Open FX that are temporal based
‚ Magic Mask
General Improvements 7
To set up the Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin:
‚ When installing DaVinci Resolve Studio, select the plugin option in the program installer.
‚ In the third party application, apply the plugin, and select the desired DRX still file.
The Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin should work with most Open FX-capable VFX
software, such as Autodesk Flame and The Foundry’s Nuke.
IMPORTANT: Use of the plugin requires a DaVinci Resolve Studio license on the
system that is running the third-party application.

Also spotted this in the new features pdf. I think it's a pretty significant new update worthy of a mention in the video. This can make certain productions a lot smoother. Shame Adobe doesn't use OpenFX. Would be cool if a Premiere/AE plugin is developed somewhere in the future.

HI,
this is a very great new feature, but can you explain a little bit more how it works ?

the doc is very unprecise

"To set up the Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin:
‚ When installing DaVinci Resolve Studio, select the plugin option in the program installer.
‚ In the third party application, apply the plugin, and select the desired DRX still file.
The Open FX DaVinci Resolve Renderer plugin should work with most Open FX-capable VFX
software, such as Autodesk Flame and The Foundry’s Nuke."

So can you explain how to apply to a app like nuke ?

Thank you by advance and congrats to this feature (and the others)

What part didn't make sense, Julien?
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

It would be great to be able to expose particular settings when exporting and using these in the Renderer. Making a unified lensflare for example, that can be used in multiple programs or comps without having to expose all the extra bits would be an excellent tool. Just expose the Global Scaling and the Lens Center Position to allow for motion.

This could work like Houdini with their Houdini Engine. You just have to bring along parameters to be exposed.

I think the main goal of the renderes was to align and streamline post production for those that do grading and finishing in Resolve. The renderer can carry more than a LUT can do so the complete look can be used as reference.

Also hope to see it being expanded upon even more with exposed controls. It shouldn't 'hurt' them that parts aren't run through the software itself, since you'd still need a Studio license on the machine to use it anyway.
