Backup Strategy

For larger organizations moving to Black Magic cloud, there is obvious interest in regular automated backups to avoid data loss if a user deletes data by mistake. How does Blackmagic recommend approaching this issue?

Are you talking about projects, or file storage?

We are exporting the projects nightly currently from within Resolve.

Be good if you could link a Backblaze or Dropbox account then set a regular export of projects up to those.

I was referring to projects, not media. I was hoping for an automated process for regular backups of projects, and backup expiration.

I’m not with a big company but my small team works on multiple projects, and we use a NAS for automatic backups to prevent accidental data loss.

Thanks Simon. Is the export automated using api that works with Black Magic cloud? Or is it a manual process performed by the editor?

Thanks Judith. How do you setup automatic backups for projects in cloud libraries? Do you use a tool or a custom script that uses a black magic API? Apologies, this is a newbie question.

hi,

I was wondering this as well.
Makes me hesitate to use the cloud.
For now I did copy paste all the cloud projects to a local library, but that's done manually.
And there is a backup option in the web interface of Blackmagic cloud, but that's really limited.
You have to do that manually as well and if you want to use the backup you have to upgrade your plan because you need another library.

I’ve been relying on external spinning disks for media archives that can be online or offline for that backup but I know that’s not the best solution if I actually had a site catastrophe.

Seth's workflow tool is the only method I've found to automate backups of the entire databases. The catch is it can't be a cloud database, it needs to be an "network" project library.

It does work though...

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. You're telling me this is all the better it gets? Since this issue has existed for at least a year and a half now it is obvious BlackMagic cares not in the least or else they would have solved this.

So in order to use the shared library in the Cloud feature, which admittedly, is limited in what it can actually do for you, i.e. forget about proxy syncing, (deep breath) to use shared database/projects via BlackMagics Cloud service I have to live without backups. Of any kind. Unless I backflip through a maze of third party attempts at solutions.

I don't like that answer. I want regular backups, automated because the many students who are learning this program can't be tasked with manually generating them. Automated Backups is a BASIC NEED that has existed since the dawn of editing software. So I give up advanced features, even though those are half the reason to be here.

Seriously?! I think I'm going to call them tomorrow. I want to hear an upper level advisor clarify this for me and explain why they aren't working to resolve this.

Just see that now you can set daily automatic backup!
A great addition which makes it more confident to use.
Let see if it works well!!

It's not easy to find. It's under the Project Server tab. Select a project library and click the 'i' in the circle on the right side of the page, and you'll see "Backups"
