Relinking full res media on remote suite

PostTue Apr 08, 2025 10:17 pm

Hi folks,

Is there a best practise for relinking full res media to a Cloud Project on a remote suite? Here's our workflow in detail - note we are using Blackmagic Cloud storage (not Dropbox, Google Drive etc):

- Edit suite A is located onboard a marine research vessel at sea. This is where camera originals are being ingested and proxies created and synced. We have Starlink on the vessel, however we shoot around 4TB per expedition, so syncing originals isn't an option. There's not much editing happening on Edit Suite A - it's mainly a way to ingest footage during expeditions so shore based editors can get started.
- Edit suites B, C and D are shore based editors (in different locations). They will start editing as soon as footage is ingested.
- At the end of an expedition, hard drives with camera originals are shipped back to Edit Suite B, where footage is copied onto a NAS. This is where my question comes in - what is the best way to reconnect the camera originals in Edit Suite B, so final exports can be done from this suite? Currently I need to go through each bin (containing 1 card of footage), right click on the clips and select Link Full Resolution Media . This becomes pretty laborious when there's a 30 day expedition with around 5 cards shot per day (each in separate bins). Is there a way to do a batch relink on the whole project?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

You should create the project from edit A, load only the originals at that sea location into the project.

This tells resolve what the originals are from the start. No relinking will be needed.

The on shore editors will have proxy only and when the drive is delivered to land, plug the drive in and you're done.

Hey Chadwick! Amazing to see you here, I watch very single YouTube video of yours..

I'm working on a wildlife TV show, and we've already done 2 episodes using the could but only to store the projects, in the upcoming episode, we want to try syncing proxies. It's a quite similar situation to what James describes but with a twist because there will be more than one edit suite ingesting originals. Could that become a problem?

Setup:

- Computer A (Production Company, located in Brussels):
• Currently ingesting Archival footage.
• Proxies are being generated automatically and synced through the shared project setup.
• Footage is stored on a Synology NAS, connected via 10GbE Ethernet.

- Computer B (Editor, located in the field):
• Will ingest newly filmed footage from external SSD drive.
• Will use proxies of the archival footage and originals of the filmed material for editing.
• Will send a copy of the external drive at the end of the edit with the filmed material to Computer A for final grade, mix and export.

- Computer C (Showrunner):
• Does not ingest anything, but needs to access all footage and proxies for review and selection.

My idea, is that because we will use the exact same folder structure on each computer, when all the "filmed" material, will be copied into the NAS of edit A, it should automatically connect the originals. ?
