SDI Distribution

PostThu Jan 05, 2023 10:48 am

Hi everyone.

i have two Cameras and a PC in another Room that work with NDI (or SDI). Right now im thinking about upgrading the Setup for Streaming and i am thinking about going full on SDI. The advantage of the NDI Setup was that i just used the Network Cable that already was there to get all of the sources from the one Room to the other. Is there a way to do this with SDI also? Put one Cable through the walls and send multiple sources over SDI? Im thinking about this because there are more and cheaper converters in the SDI world and also the ATEM mini Pro looks like a great solution to avoid very expensive PCs.

All in all im trying to deside which direction i will go for future updates

so, can i send multiple SDI Sources over one cable and split them afterwards or use them on the ATEM Mini? I thought on the switcher i used once there was an AUX input where i was able to choose the source.

In your instance, NDI remains the most viable method of passing multiple video signals through to another room using one cable.

What you're asking for is a multiplexer. Most use fiber as their transport.

Even so, they're quite expensive.

Another hacky option is to use a 3G quad link to 12G muxer and then a 12G to 3G quad link demuxer.

If you're literally going between 2 adjacent rooms your best bet may be to just pull multiple cables.

if i understand this right, 2x AJA 12GM would also work. Im wondering if there is something similar from BM. But even if its working, for this price i would rather try to put some more cables or switch the existing cable for a fiber.

Right now i have a situation where i only have 2 SDI cables where i would need 4. I would have to push 2 more through that cable tunnel.

I regularly use 10 and 12 way mini RG59 coax snakes for 3G. A single 10 way has about the same diameter as 3 RG6 cables. Unless spec’d for 12G the existing coax likely isn’t 12G so a quad mux is likely not an option over the existing copper.

Good Luck
