Camera Update 8.5.1 change to Blackmagic Camera Fiber Conver

PostThu Feb 22, 2024 12:19 pm

Today I updated our G2 broadcast cameras and monitors with the latest 8.5.1 firmware.
While on this, I checked if there was also a update to the Blackmagic Camera Fiber Converter.
There actually was one but there is no documentation on this in the release notes.
Does anyone know what has been changed/fixed?

The studio converted does not have a update. So its camera side only.

This is correct.

We always bundle the latest software for all our camera products into our software utility so that's why 8.5.1 is telling you about this update even though the only NEW element in 8.5.1 is for the camera and viewfinders listed in the release notes.

Camera 7.9.2 software was the release that contained an update that improved compatibility between the two SMPTE Fiber devices from the Camera Fiber Converter end. This was SMPTE Fiber v2.0.3 for the Camera Fiber Converter. The release notes for 7.9.2 mention the change.

Using the latest 8.5.1 utility... If your Camera Fiber Converter is currently on 1.3 it will tell you that an update is available (2.0.5) and once you have updated your Camera Fiber Converter it will say that it is up to date on the correct software which is 2.0.3. The latest for the Studio Fiber Converter end of the chain is indeed 1.3.

There is very little functional difference between 1.3 and 2.0.3 for the Camera Fiber Converter. It was to address an issue that was causing some pairs of Camera and Studio Fiber Converter units to be less compatible with each other when powering up.

We've been having this issue that the release is addressing, but we are unable to update, only getting a message "Update failed" Please check your connections". Going from 1.3 to 2.0.3 which seems to be the shortest jump. Tried different cables, converters and update releases, no luck.

What should we do?
