Connecting CR-N100 to Atem Mini

PostMon Jan 29, 2024 9:02 pm

Hi,

Is it possible to connect a Canon CR-N100 camera to an Atem Mini Extreme via IP? Is there a recommended device that will convert the CR-N100s video-over-ip-signal to HDMI, so that I can connect it to one of the HDMI inputs of the Atem MIni?

Best,
Markus

The ATEM Mini range of switchers do not accept video over IP. The Canon CR-N100 out is NDI, so all you need is a an NDI to HDMI converter. The Birddog Play is a simply RJ45 in, HDMI out and decodes NDI/NDI HX signals up to 4K60p

For around the same money here's a useful looking NDI HX-HDMI encoder & decoder and probably better suited for your application. The Canon CR-N100 also outputs SRT, so alternatively you could use the Zowietek as an SRT decoder into your ATEM Mini.

Thanks Louis!

Do I understand correctly that both NDI and SRT uses standard ethernet and can run over my local network?

Given that my local network is 1GB and that the camera, an ethernet switch and the Atem is all in the same room (i.e. no very long ethernet cables and multiple switches), will I notice any latency compared to a direct HDMI-cable between the CR-N100 and my Atem?

A 1GB network is fine if running 1080p60 max. Avoid having non-essential traffic on the network, as it can stutter NDI, if busy.

NDI uses up to 100mbps per NDI channel at 1080p. For NDI HX and SRT you're looking approx a tenth of that bandwidth-wise.

NDI does have inherent latency, but it is minimal. You can feed speech audio into the input of your PTZ from your sound mixer, so the resulting image and audio are perfectly in sync.

Thanks again!

You say there is inherent latency. Is it noticeable? The goal is to run only one cable only from the camera to the video mixer.

As mentioned it's minimal. I can't give you a figure as it would be specific to your set-up. Your best bet is to install NDI Monitor on your computer and run a test.

Any free/recommended NDI players?

Use of NDI is free. NDI Studio Monitor is included in the NDI Core Suite 5.6. Scroll to bottom of link page for Download.

We use NDI on numerous live events with OBS and vMix - works perfectly with good spec kit (particularly the graphics card). Check YouTube for more useful info on NDI integration.

We are looking to purchase 2 Canon CR-N100 PTZ cameras and want to use the NDI. If I purchase the NDI to HDMI converter for both and I run the ethernet cable from the CR-N100 to a network switch and then to the NDI to HDMI converters that are connected to the ATEM Mini Pro will that cause a problem?

For example, turning everything on can a camera accidentally switch from Cam 1 input to Cam 2 input on the ATEM Mini by doing this?
