URSA Studio Viewfinder

PostSun Aug 25, 2024 2:27 am

This post is for anyone searching for others who may have experienced issues with their URSA Studio Viewfinder or Eyepiece viewfinders. We have 6 studio and 6 regular URSA viewfinders. 5 out of the 6 original Studio's and probably 4 of the eyepiece units have failed over the 3 years we've had them. So "most" of them have died and I think only 1 of them we caught in the window of the 1 year warranty.

The good news and reason for this post, is that if your units power up but display no image, you most likely have a bad BNC termination. We cut off the stock BNC termination and re-tipped with a Kings BNC termination for 1855A belden cable and it worked like a charm. Clearly the factory China made cable and termination is junk, but thankfully if you carefully solder the stranded conductor (which is not copper FYI) you can revive your gear and save $1,500 bucks for the next unit that is going to fail on you again.

We just brought back several of these to life and it's a great feeling knowing you're beating the bank!
We love our Blackmagic gear - the cost to tech ratio is off the charts, but quality control and quality of certain components is unacceptable for broadcast or any professional camera use. I would gladly pay another $500 bucks for ANY piece of gear they make, in order to secure more reliable terminations, power supplies and the like. If you know, you know.

Cheers and and happy productions!
