Web Presenter / Web Presenter 4K - HLS

PostTue Oct 01, 2024 5:04 am

I frequently stream to YouTube Live. I'm thrilled that Web Presenter is able to stream SRT but, as far as I know, YouTube does not ingest SRT streams yet (aside from a brief period during PlugFest).

YouTube does currently allow streaming HLS. Are there any plans to enable HLS streaming with the Web Presenters?

Thanks

Hi Roman - yeah, I understand that, but YouTube is still not supporting SRT for most people right?

Am I missing something?

We've been streaming rowing events to YouTube HLS at 1440p60 (at 13mbps) up to 12 hours a day over the last two years. We use an SDI to USB3 interface out of our ATEM and stream via OBS. It's very easy and we've found it delivers a better image quality (particularly improves the background detail and water surface) than streaming RTMP. Just our seasoned experience, others may differ.

The converter we use is the AJA U-Tap SDI USB 3.0. Expensive compared to Amazon cheapies, but won't let you down.

Louis : thats interesting .. Because quality of stream is based on encoder .. Hls or Rtmp are delivery protocols and have nothing with final quality of picture ..

Unfortunately, I'm not technical enough to know why with the same cameras and switcher, when we switch from RTMP to HLS ingest, all the issues with dithering in the background and the surface of the water dramatically improved.

Here's the last rowing event we streamed in HLS:

Louis : It was the same encoder ? Ahh .. You are looking on Youtube .. But Youtube can use different compression presets on HLS streams and on RTMP ingested streams ..

The switcher was the Blackmagic ATEM Television Studio Pro 4K. We started with the LiveU Solo SDI, then a Magewell Ultra Encode SDI - all into YouTube RTMP. Then on one event in 2022 we ditched the hardware encoders, used an AJA U-Tap SDI > OBS Laptop > YouTube HLS, saw an appreciable improvement and that's what we've streamed with ever since.
