Understanding Terminology

PostThu Oct 24, 2024 1:13 am

Hello everyone,

A few days ago I got my first Atem Mini PRO. I am super happy with it so far. Even I haven't used it yet on a live stream. That's coming soon. I am going to be the guy behind the cameras, changing the angles and getting things on air like lower-thirds etc, I wanted to understand that little magic console I have in front of me.

Watching videos on YouTube, isn't always very helpful.

For example: I watched 2 videos for using lower-thirds, one was using a HD image with green background, another with black. I used transparent PNG at first and black background PNG in the media tab later and one of them (can't remember which one I am out of the office now) worked. But how and why... I don't know. I didn't get it.

Another issue. The Manual of the ATEM, I feel is incomplete. For example. What does "COL 1" and "COL 2" do? (I asked myself). So I went in the manual and ctrl+F to find out. Well... NOTHING in English.

What about explaining in simple words the terms: Fill Source & Key Source. Nothing. Then explaining to a newbie the terms "Downstream" and "Upstream". What do they mean? What about explaining all the buttons we see in the atem software control like "BKGD" and DSK1. That second one people think at first that it means DISK 1.

I know every single job has its Terminology. I am a photographer / camera operator originally. It took me a while to understand "Color Temperature" and "white balance". But someone explained back then years ago. And I wasn't afraid of light anymore.

Is there a video or a post that explains in simple words for us - not very intelligent I must admit - the Terminology and what every single button and menu does? I'd prefer a video. Reading isn't my thing. Again sorry if my English are so & so. Not a native speaker here.

Thank you!

for lower thirds u need transparent images loaded into media server andafter that u can put it online thru DSK .. u must set DSK to FILL and KEY in MEDIA PLAYER ..

COL 1 , 2 is color generators .. I dont think , u need it :)
