Red connect + decklink 8K

PostSun Jan 12, 2025 10:34 pm

hello,

Any field feedbacks for this solution ? With decklink, max usable definition seems to be 8Kp60. Sufficient for capture and use for slow motion ?

thanks

I think the image on the RED site is pretty clear.. 8k 60P on Quadlink SDI.. 8K 120P With SMPTE 2110 out on IP based media.

So Slomo 8K on the quadlink card is not a thing. ;)

Keep in mind that you need a 10Gbit link on the V-Raptor to do this. And the latency is about 1.5 seconds from the last Demo i have seem that was running R3D on Fiber IP by Red Connect. Due to rendering the 8K RAW into use-able video..

Which we deemed not use-able for LIVE video registrations.

Thanks Daniel. Seems that expensive Sony still remains the only solution :(

Not sure if you looked into what Red in 8K expensive is.. But the buy-able solution is around 15K for the Red Connect adapter on the V-Raptor. Then you need a powerfull PC matching the specs Red tell you.
You need the Vraptor itself.. So you will be 50K in before you have a camera up and running in 8K. And that is without Slomo.. ;)

Wondering what BMD will do within the next 5 years since the new Cine line cameras can record up to 180fps in 8K and 224fps in lower resolutions..
And the Ursa Broadcast can do 120fps in HD.

Just a matter of time i guess there will be some camera with Quad output / IP capabilities that would be able to push those framerates to external box for slomo playout. Maybe with the use of a Hyperdeck 8K Extreme. Running 10G network into the Hyperdeck being able to play it out in slomo or something..

But who knows.. Might never happen..

I bet on this solution because locally it is easy to find a RED for rent and impossible to rent a UHC-8300. And also because AMD will offer new GPU 5xxx series (A6000 prerequisite).
