Zoom and focus control via Companion – Any Ideas?

PostFri Mar 21, 2025 6:26 am

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a way to control zoom and focus on Blackmagic Studio Camera 4K and Micro Studio Camera G2 using Bitfocus Companion.

I’m already using Companion to control an ATEM Mini Extreme ISO and an ATEM TVS HD8, and it works great for switching, macros, and tally – but I haven’t found a method to control camera zoom through Companion.

If anyone has successfully implemented this or has ideas for a workaround (via ATEM, direct VISCA control, scripting, OSC, MIDI triggers, or any other creative solution) – I’d really appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

There's been some interest in a module, but nothing has materialized yet. Zoom and focus can be controlled through Companion using a Generic HTTP module.

FYI the latest version of the REST API is 90 pages (3X) and hidden in the Ursa Cine Manual.

Sadly zoom and focus is only position based for now, I wish they would implement zoom/focus speed like they did with SDI and Bluetooth

I can see that being an issue for a zoom rocker but it's not much of an issue with a rotary encoder. If anything I don't want speed control (for rotaries) because it affects the repeatability of the move. Also you can address speed thru a rocker by addressing larger units the further the control is depressed. I think the larger issue is the speed of communication.
