GPI and Tally Interface Update

PostFri Apr 14, 2023 5:45 pm

Hi All,
We've recently updated from a Production Studio to a Production Studio 4K. Our previous switcher was running the tally box perfectly. The new one doesn't work with the tally.

I've downloaded the latest atem software and am trying to update the GPI box. It recognises that it needs to update but all I get is "update failed - check your connection". I''ve tried connecting USB and ethernet and each individually. I also can't get to the IP address screen as the atem connection software crashes each time I click on that box.

Any ideas what the issue might be and how I can get it up to date. I'm guessing out of date software may be why it's stopped working but if I can't update it - I'm stuck!

Thanks
Richard

Try usb and work from a USB2.0 port. Often firmware failures happen when trying to upload by a USB3 port. ;)

Hi, did you find a work around for this, as having the same issue.

Run ATEM Setup on both MacOS and windows 10, but cannot get an update,
Current firmware is 9.0.1, and cannot get the tally to work with our set-up.

Have tried running this on a USB 2 connection also.

We are having the same issue. Does the tally unit need to have a direct internet connection through the switch gateway? Right now we are trying with the network on the laptop.

Anyone ever figure out the update issue? Just received a GPI/Tally Interface today, I can only access it over USB, was able to set it's IP and also switcher IP, however, if I unplug the USB, the GPIO/Tally module still shows in the ATEM Setup Util, but it fails to connect. Also, it says it wants to update the GPIO/Tally Interface to software version 9.7, however, it fails to do so over USB and or Ethernet connection.

Really stuck here. I've sent an email request over to BMD, but just like the first time I reached out to them for another issue last year, I suspect another not-so-helpful and snarky reply, if anything.

Anyway, hopefully someone can help me out here. Thanks!

If it works, let it be. BM is fine with whatever bug is keeping it from updating to whatever makes it 'better" but if it turns the red light on, be happy.

Yeah, sorry, I aspire to be a bit better than BMD's somewhat lazy responses.

For anyone who is looking to actually RESOLVE this particular scenario, I have found the answer.

Here's what I tried after a couple of hours of trial and error:
The following ATEM Software version packages will update the GPI & Tally Module over a USB connection:

1. 7.0.3
2. 8.0
3. 8.6.5

Beyond 8.6.5, I am no longer receiving the prompt to update the GPI Tally module when opening ATEM Setup utility. I have brought my system up to the current release which at this time, is 9.7.

One thing to note, is that you still cannot change any settings over Ethernet, although I am now successfully able to open the settings pane for the GPI Tally module over Ethernet, I am still prompted to connect the USB cable to actually execute any settings changes. I guess that is as good as one can expect from a 14-year-old product that is still being sold as the current tally solution as of today.

Anyway, hopefully, this will help out any other broadcast engineers with OCD tendencies such as myself.
