Distorted AppleTV through BMD SDI converter

PostThu Aug 29, 2024 5:51 pm

hello,

I'm converting Apple TV HDMI output to SDI using BMD's bidirectional mini converter. I don't know where the fault lies, but the audio has 2 pitches -- the correct one, and a pitch shifted version. Is the converter at fault? I also tried a Lumantek ez-CONVERTER HS which produced no output. Not sure if it was deffective or not. Does anyone have insight into this problem? Is it HDCP related? Sample rate related? Possible solutions? Apple TV audio is set to stereo, 16 bit output.

Thanks in advance!
Grant

Update:

What I thought I remembered as pitch shifting, was not. It's just distorted.
Plugging the Apple TV into a regular TV with no converters produces good audio.

I should add, that the signal also passes through a Blackmagic SDI to HDMI 6g, so that I can take analog output to the mixer. An HDMI feed from a computer works fine, but the output from the Apple TV (and through the bidirectional 3G SDI / HDMI converter) is distorted.

Have you tried to set the audio on Apple TV? We have had to change ours from "Auto" to "Stereo" so that it won't try to send multi-channel audio. Worth a try.

We use BMD’s 12G SDI/HDMI converter and we do get a picture. The Apple TV is used when we need a wireless camera in the church. An iPhone on a gimbal AirPlays to the Apple TV.

Try to go through a converter that does scaling (UpDownCross HD)

I'm having the same issue. Apple tv 4k, running 1080p 59.94, hdmi to sdi micro converter into atem tv studio hd. Distorted sound both for air play and menu sounds, it sounds kind of like buffer error or something, distorted and aliasing, almost like a ring modulator. I tried a decimator and that sounds clean, passing hdmi to sdi without format conversion. I've tried resetting everything and different hdmi cables etc, all the basic troubleshooting steps. Power is from the supplied blackmagic power adapter. Thanks!
