Two cameras setup with Blackmagic and Wirecast

PostMon Sep 10, 2012 5:32 pm

The company I work for recently started doing Webinars/Workshops. Since we're just starting out, our setup is minimal. We are currently streaming with a Canon GL-2 via Firewire to a Windows laptop through WebEx. The audio is a Shure wireless lapel microphone coming in from the Sure receiver via a USB adapter.

The ROI is looking good for webinars, and I'm now looking into upping our production quality.

Equipment we have:
Intel Core i5 - 2.3GHz / Windows 7 Pro 64bit / AMD Radeon HD 6630M / HDMI / USB 3.0 / 8GB RAM
Panasonic HMC150 Camcorder x2
Wireless Shure Lapel Microphone x2

We want to be able to live-stream two cameras with smooth & seamless video switching, pre-recorded content, and graphical overlays. Telestream's Wirecast seems to be the way to go, and for a decent price. Personally, I would rather use a Mac for this, but IT will probably end up with a PC. Wirecast works with both, so that works for us either way.

What Blackmagic hardware would I need to accomplish live-streaming two Panasonic HMC150 camcorders to Wirecast as well as at least two XLR inputs?

Anything I'm forgetting that I should look into?

Hi, Joshep;

As I have a similar idea,I´ll try to comment my findings. I know of some people trying this set up with : a sonnett express PCie-thunderbolt card + a BMD Quad on a macbook pro with wirecast.

However I am looking at another more affordable portable rig based on two cams like you, an OWC Helios PCie Thunderbolt+Decklink Duo Rig should work without problem. Even sonnet have just appeared with an SE express model but I ´d like to try the OWC with a decklink duo. I also have an eye on another solution based on a ultrastudioexpress or ultrastudio mini recorder just for back up in spite of no possibility to switch between HDMI SDI sources.

You should also need to connect the panasonics with a BMD battery HDMI to SDI converter to get signal onto wirecast.

Here's another workflow that we are looking into:

Panasonic HMC150 x2 and Canon 60D x1
All HDMI out, connected to ATEM Television Studio via HDMI
ATEM Television Studio connected to Windows PC (?)

What would I need to be able to connect the ATEM Television Studio to the Windows PC?
Is there any additional hardware that would be needed to live-stream the 3x HDMI connected cameras and record?

Streaming on a Windows PC (desktop) I would recommend installing the Intensity Pro card (HDMI). This works well with Wirecast. The H.264 output from the TVS via USB2 is not compatible with Wirecast.

By the way.... you'll need to make sure your devices can connect to the TVS OK.. and you'll need to probably install Magic Lantern on the 60d to be able to disable all the display overlays that would otherwise be there. I tried to do that myself... but my initial attempts did not seem to go well and I could not fully disable the displays.

Atem TVs studio was my first option, in fact it´s one of the nicest options but I think it depends on your requirements you´ll have to invest on more equipment - You should buy apart from the BMD battery converters an Behr ultracurve to get audio into Atem. HDMI extended cables is no easy task. Atem TVS does not stream directly except on livestream which procaster recognizes through USB.People I know switch with Atem and stream to another machine with wirecast + intensity exterme/express etc.. However it doesn´t stress CPU as the other way.

As I said thunderbolt it´s making good options and another recent new it´s the Matrox VS4 for PC, you can record the 4 streams direct to disc . I bought a macbookpro 15" so I am trying to go thunderbolt route in a future for a more compact two cam rig.

If you want exchange ideas you can drop me an email.

cheers
