This question has come up before - when you connect the ATEM to a PC/Mac, it appears as a device to the PC, which is acting as the server.
When you connect a disk to the ATEM, the ATEM is the server, and the disk is the device.
The ATEM port can only be one of those at a time - it can't be both at the same time.
I'm not sure why you're reluctant to use the Ethernet port (this does not mean you need a "network" - but you do need an Ethernet connection to at least your PC/Mac) - but that does appear to be your only alternative at this point.
