HyperDeck Studio HD Plus - re-encoding to H.264 for playback

PostSun Oct 03, 2021 4:32 pm

Is there any video software (re-encoding) to convert random video files to the H.264 format that would be reliably playable in the Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus??

I appreciate your input.

Bumping this as it'd be such a useful thing to be able to do. I sometimes have to feed A7siii rushes from an SNG truck but the camera will only play one clip at a time. I was hoping the HyperDeck would play the files but sadly not!

Video playout of externally encoded H.264 files is not well supported on the HyperDecks currently. For preparing external files for HyperDeck playout, you are better off using either ProRes or DNxHD as the codec as discussed in various previous threads about this:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=108894

If you need to batch convert a bunch of video files to ProRes, most of the major video editing suites have a way to do this. Such as the Media Management transcode page in DaVinci Resolve:

Or using Final Cut Pro or Apple Compressor on a Mac:

Using Adobe Media Encoder (included with Premiere):

The only HyperDeck that can do that now is the 4K Pro but BMD has promised a software update for all other recently announced HyperDeck HD models to have that capability as well.

Do you know when an update will be out to fix the H264 issue?

HyperDeck Firmware Update 8.1.1 should improve playback of externally rendered H.264 video files on the current lineup of HyperDeck models (HD Mini, HD Plus, HD Pro, and 4K Pro): https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/suppor ... dfcd9d6228

This is still probably no guarantee that the HyperDeck will successfully playout every type of H.264 file. I suspect that the H.264 video and audio encoding details probably still need to be fairly similar to what the HyperDeck uses for recording (such as the H.264 profile, level, bit depth, sub-sampling, entropy encoding, audio codec, etc.).

But I did have pretty good luck using the new HyperDeck H.264 export preset in DaVinci Resolve 18 and getting the file to play back on a HyperDeck Studio HD Mini.

As I mentioned above, I had pretty good luck with the HyperDeck H.264 preset in DaVinci Resolve 18 for playback on a HyperDeck Studio HD Mini, but only after updating to HyperDeck firmware 8.1.1.

With earlier HyperDeck firmware, H.264 playback of externally encoded files was not smooth, but the most recent update seems to have improved thing quite a bit, at least when using the Resolve export preset.

Dave, how did you update the HyperDeck Studio HD Mini?

I am using the latest version 8.1.1 but the setup utility indicates a version 8.0.4 but either via USB or Network I do not receive an update message as usual. I am using Windows 10.
Resolve Studio 18.6.4 build 6
HP Z840 dual Xeon 28 core, 96GB RAM, 2 x Evo 860 SSDs, RAID set, GTX3060/12GB (Studio Driver), Win10 Pro (22H2), Speed Editor, Alphatrack, RME Digiface USB, Surround Controller, 5.1 Monitoring.

Guess you have the old mini.. And that is the latest firmware for that unit then.. Later versions are only for the newest range of hyperdecks..

Just got the new HyperDeck Studio HD Mini and cannot update as well. Did you ever hear back from BMD on a solution for this?

Succesfully rendered H264 files with Wondershare Uniconverter 14, with the following settings:
Video
Encoder: H264
Resolution: 1920x1080
Frame rate: 25, 30 tested, working perfectly
Bitrate: 4000 - 8000 tested, working perfectly
Profile: Main
Level: 4.1
Audio
Encoder: AAC
Channel: 2
Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
Bitrate: 192 kbps
The converted files woks flawlessly on Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus, in the Hyperdeck Studio HD Mini and Hyperdeck Shuttle HD if I set the format in the menu to H264 High.
