Mini Extreme Upstream Keyers limitation?

PostSun Dec 05, 2021 4:32 pm

I've come to the conclusion that I can only show two upstream keyers at a time on the ATEM Mini Extreme, is that correct? There are in fact 4 keyers, but no matter what I try, I can only get two of them to show up at the same time. The tech specs (https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... s/W-APS-17) say: "Upstream Keyers: 4". Am I missing something here?

If this is a limitation, then where can I learn more about that? And what is the use of 4 upstream keyers if you can't use all of them?

It appears that only two of the keyers are accessible from the hardware control surface built-in to the Extreme models. You need to use software control to access the others.

Okay, I think I figured it out: the Extreme only has two DVE's. Setting up a keyer with a "flying key" will use a DVE for that, and this limits the option to show more keyers which use a DVE. So it's not the number of keyers that is limited, but it's the number of DVE's. Will probably have to rethink my setup a bit. Probably something a lot of people around here know, but I'm pretty new to live video production.

@Roman and @Frank, saw your messages too late (didn't refresh the page before answering). Thanks for responding. I was not talking about the hardware surface, I'm actually never touching that (hmmm... buttons with multiple contacts underneath, making a straight-on press always an adventure).
It seems to be a DVE-limit I'm running into. I'll have to look into a different way of setting things up. I wrongly assumed that each keyer has its own DVE, but that's not the case. Too bad. This is how it goes: BMD brings out a device with much more features, and then when you start to enhance your production you always want even more... :D

Thanks Roman, but I'm using Supersource for a different purpose already (presenter screen). So I'll have to work with this limitation. But it's still an impressive device, the Extreme. I see more possible options. Downside with Supersource is that the DVE's are somewhat more limited (no flying keys for example).

Sounds like your setup could benefit from using Macros to switch the supersource and DVE. Or perhaps take a look at mixeffect. Or you could buy a Constellation which has 4x DVE

When you stop and think about the functionality that's built into this line of switchers -- especially the Extreme -- it truly is amazing.

If you need to fly the boxes in Super Source, definitely check out the MixEffect app for iPad/iPhone. Google it... it's a game changer. The developer is a member here.

I totally agree.

I'm a software developer, I'm already flying in and out some of the keyers through macros. With fully customizable easing, because I'm allergic to linear motion in animations. I'll probably post something for others to use here. It's basically a macro-animation-generator that runs in a webbrowser, entirely clientside (JavaScript). It's too crude to publish now, but when I polish it some more, it might be useful to some.

As a sidenote: I'm generating the entire ATEM configuration, macros, title screens and lower-thirds (PNGs) for our 7 hour shows fully automated (I even grab the show's data, like presentation titles, speaker names for lower-thirds etc. directly from our database). It's basically one click and it downloads a zip file containing the XML and "ATEM Media Pool" folder that can be restored to either a Mini Pro or Mini Extreme. Obviously, this code runs on a (local) server.
I'm pretty happy with the way BMD set this up. Too bad the documentation for all the possible macro-options is lacking/non-existent. Oh, and if there's a way to automate reloading macros in ATEM Software Control, then I'm all ears.
