UMP + decklink pro 12g is able to time travel

PostThu May 26, 2022 10:45 am

Hello,
I have a very strange issue as my computer seems to receive a video signal form futur (i mean past).
My setup :
Ipad : TC generator
UMP : filming the ipad screen
Computer : sdi wired to UMP with decklink 4k pro 12g.
TC read on computer screen is lower than TC on camera screen and TC generator screen itself
Here is a photo of my setup

I really not get how it’s possible
Any idea ?

That looks like time-of-day timecode - which would be counting upwards, meaning your computer is showing a time from the past, not the future?

Yes, exactly,
in a second photo, I see 17 frames of latency, it's quite enormous
I don't see how to reduce it as none the ursa mini or the decklink seems to have some settings for this

It's not that unexpected. Computer processing will always have more latency. If you need as low as possible, use genlocked devices and genlock the Decklink as well.

Which software are you using on the desktop, and what is your goal? A lot of the delay may come from how the SW buffers the video - larger buffer means larger delay, but more tolerance for slight performance hiccups. If you're only recording or streaming, it won't matter anyway, so the default buffer is usually quite large.
