Live switching with upstream key ... noob confusion

PostWed Aug 10, 2022 10:27 pm

Hi all

I'm working on TV Studio Pro HD and I'm confused on how I switch in and out of a "shot" with upstream and downstream keys in a live situation.

One of our most common "shots" is going to be a comp of a podium computer feed (lets call it "PowerPoint"), and the camera 1 feed ("CAM1") covering the speaker. To achieve this, I use DSK1 as a "background" graphic with holes in it (for the PowerPoint and CAM1 feeds). I run the PowerPoint as a scaled USK DVE in one hole, and compose my CAM1 shot to show the speaker through the second hole (in my DSK1 graphic).

I was pleased with myself for a moment that I got all that working (without supersource) but once I try switching something I'm not underrating what is happening...

DSK1 TIE allows me to cut back and forth between CAM1 and CAM2 with the DSK graphic just attached to the CAM1 feed. But if I use "KEY1 TIE" to add the USK to the comp it changes my preview camera feed to CAM2 (current program feed).

What am i failing to understand about upstream keys and "KEY1 TIE"?
How can I switch from CAM2, to CAM1 with USK and DSK, and then back to CAM2?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer ... I'm sure I'm being stoopid

Lots goin’ on here so first things first. The DSK is the top layer above the background and the upstream keyers, background is the bottom layer hence “background”.

I don’t believe that a USK can be tied. The function of the tie is to allow the background and/or key layers to trans with the DSK. The USK are “tied” when the bus is selected for trans. There is no DSK bus select so it uses the tie function to achieve the same result.

To switch to cam 2 clean from Cam1/USK/DSK select BG, Key1, Tie1 then cut/auto/tbar. The trans will switch the BG, cam 2, clean. What you’re likely missing is that you don’t “Tie” a USK, both the BG and Key1 must be selected prior to the trans. The DSK is really intended for a bug or ID so all the switching happens underneath. If this doesn’t make sense or I’ve misunderstood please clarify.

Good Luck

Thanks Howard, I'll try that approach out tomorrow when I'm back on site.

Thanks all

Roman you are right, my issue boiled down to having to press BKGD and KEY1TIE at the same time
