Trouble using Blackmagic URSA G1 as PC Camera

PostFri May 12, 2023 7:15 pm

Hello experts,

I want to use a Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K G1 as Computer Camera (Windows 11 Pro).\

MY STEPS SO FAR...

...Monitor 3G and Mini Recorder: doesnt work for me as windows doesnt recognize Tunderbolt 3 Cables (despite me owning a ThunderboltEX4)

...Decklink Duo (PCIe Slot): appears in BM Device Video Setup but it does not detect my Camera when attached with a Video SDI cable

...The video SDI cable is working properly as i can see the image on my Video Assist 4K Monitor and Colorgrading Monitor.

...also not working: HDMI cable to try the route Camera SDI out -> Video Assist 4K Monitor HDMI out -> PC Motherboard

As I can not find any manuals or videos how to use an ursa as PC camera i really hope to find a smart person who can help me trouble shoot

I checked all possible software:
Blackmagic Device Video Setup
NVIDIA Broadcast
OBS
Media Express

As Decklink Duo 1 seems to have other Device Video Setup screen than the duo 2 i am not sure if i need to change something on the settings or the camera settings to make it appear / connect or if i need another piece like the ATEM to make it work -

ANY toughts HIGHLY appreciated
thank you!

Michael

ATEM Mini Pro.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

The DUO supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1080p60.
Did you setup the URSA to output a compatible resolution?
Or you could try the front SDI output as that is intended for a viewfinder and is restricted to HD resolutions.

Thank you for all your input so far.

Forum User Uli Plank suggests on one thread that the Ursa Mini Pro 4.6K Gen1 is NOT usable with DeckLink or Atem etc. as Computer Camera?

„the Ursa Mini Pro offers no tethering, you can only control it via Bluetooth. You should have got the ATEM Mini or Min Pro CCU Camera Control, but these only work with the Pocket 4K or 6K cameras.“

Can anyone approve that statement?
Do I need to buy a pocket 4K + ATEM mini?

Thank you!

The decklink DUO does not present a UVC compliant interface to windows , so most programs will not see the video as though it was a camera.

The ursa Mini Pro can be controlled from an HDMI Atem Mini using the BiDirectional SDI HDMI 3G converter.
And the Atem Mini will present as a UVC ( camera ) in Windows.

It might help if you describe what control you want of the UMP and what programs and OS you wish to use with the camera.
Are you hoping to get 4K ? Or just HD?

Thank you Andy! You are really helping me by sharing these informations!

To answer your questions:
OS: Windows 11 Pro
Programs: NVIDIA Broadcast & OBS Broadcaster
Resolution: 4K would be perfect, but at the moment I’m happy with any quality

The Atem Mini Pro has an HD output right? Would there be a higher solution?

Thank you!

I’m not a Windows 11 user ( well - for broadcast work ) and although I have used OBS for broadcast - not recently.
A little check and it looks like neither OBS or NVidia broadcast support Decklink as a capture device.

From this it appears you need a UVC capture device ( looks like a webcam to the software )

If you stick with Blackmagic , then either a WebPresenter (4k or HD) for direct SDI to UVC.
Alternatively you could use an SDI model of the ATEM Mini for HD.
Another option is to convert your camera SDI to HDMI with a converter ( in HD ) and then use an ATEM mini which has hdmi inputs.
Other alternatives are choosing one of the Hyperdecks which also provide webcam output ( again I think you may be limited to HD ).
Finally the 3G and 12G HDR versions of the Video Assist have USB Webcam output.

I suggest you look carefully at the product pages to check the features.
I’m assuming you are okay with manually controlling the URSA

URAS MINI PRO
To
Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI
To
ATEM MINI PRO ISO
To

But the the camera does not pop up - i have the settings of the camera to the right quality and framerate

Anyone made it happen?
It’s hard for me to find the right items i need to set it up as a webcam for live streaming

How are you connecting the ATEM to your computer? You need to use USB

The one input camlink 4k should work as well. Or even one of those cheap twenty dollar hdmi to usb capture devices on amazon; although the quality won't be as good.

After converting to HDMI if there is none on that camera, of course.
