HLS would be an appreciable addition too, as YouTube now offers this as an alternative to lack-lustre RTMP. HLS is far superior in shadows and motion detail. I have found RTMP to be severely lacking when it comes to sports coverage, particularly rowing.

Louis : Thats wrong .. HLS and RTMP (and SRT) are delivery protocols .. It have nothing with encoding and quality of it .. Encoding is for example H264 , H265 (aka HEVC) .. Quality of stream deppend from used codec in encoding and his settings .. etc ..

Thank you - I am cognisant with the technical differences. No matter what RTMP hardware, software and settings we used over the last 7-8 years, YouTube's recent HLS ingest option immediately produced superior images and motion for our outdoor sports coverage, so I am simply going on the results of our experience.

HLS has higher latency than most of the other protocols (which is one of the reasons SRT is likely going to be the preferred format in the future) but HLS does support adaptive bit rate streaming (as does SRT), which may have some effect on the perceived quality of the footage received for display - RTMP doesn't handle that as well so when using RTMP bit rates are often lower than they could be at any given time when using HLS/SRT even if the base codec is the same, as with RTMP you need to pick a bit rate that will be stable for network conditions, while HLS and SRT can adjust for this dynamically.
