SDI to HDMI Mirco converter 12g issues

PostMon Oct 02, 2023 9:27 pm

We have a SDI line (~200ft, 1080p, 59.94) running from an aux off of our Atem switcher to an auxiliary room that has an Atlona system with HDMI in. We tried putting a SDI to HDMI Mirco converter 12g but cant get any signal in the atlona. Swapped the micro converter for a decimator and it works fine. Put the micro converter back then added the decimator and also works. Here are some basic diagrams of configs that we tried.

Atem -> SDI-> Micro -> HDMI -> Atlona = No Signal (multiple HDMI in's tested)
Atem -> SDI-> Micro -> HDMI -> Marshal Monitor = Signal
Atem -> SDI-> Decimator -> HDMI -> Atlona = Signal
Atem -> SDI-> Micro -> HDMI -> Decimator -> HDMI -> Atlona = Signal

What is going on that the Micro Converter does not work on its own?

We currently have a Micro Converter on another TV and that one works fine.

Possibly to do with the input sensitivity of the 12G Micro on the end of an SDI run of 60 metres causing sync loss, and that the Decimator is more accommodating of the line attenuation. One workaround is to put the 12G Micro Converter by the ATEM switcher output and use a 60 metre fibre HDMI.

There seems to be a compatibility issue with the HDMI out of the micro converters. Some TV's and beamers don't like it. I've experienced it myself and have also seen multiple messages about it here in the forum. Using a different brand converter always seems to fix it.

Have you tried connecting all three elements next to each other using short SDI & HDMI cables? This would either confirm or negate my SDI cable length supposition and point towards eMilty's comment.

I can not move the atem or the atlona but I did try running Using my macbook and some other cable.

Macbook -> HDMI -> Decimator -> ~60ft SDI -> Micro -> HDMI -> Atlona = Signal

I then also tried

Atem -> ~200ft SDI -> Decimator -> ~60ft SDI -> Micro -> HDMI -> Atlona = Signal

So based on what was said im leaning towards too long of a SDI run and getting Sync Loss.
Is there another small 12g SDI to HDMI converter I should use, or just get another Decimator, or some in line booster?

Though I am still confused as to why the Marshall monitor also worked just fine on that ~200ft SDI run with the Micro converter

I can't offer an answer to why the Decimator works and the Micro doesn't, but a Decimator or a re-sync SDI amplifier seems an expensive way to crack this particular nut. If it's practical to run in a new cable alongside the SDI route, I would still opt for the SDI>HDMI Micro next to the ATEM out and a long HDMI fibre cable straight into your Atlona. It's appreciably cheaper than a Decimator.

Have you got a 3G or 6G converter you can try instead?
