ATEM Mini "Key" -"On" physical button only selects Chroma

PostThu Dec 19, 2019 5:50 am

I really like it to select Luma. I mean, I can just click the right thing in the software control, but it would be nice to use the physical button.

Am I missing something?

Yep, butons currently aren't configurable.
I do it with a midi add-on for Windows. Same for DSK on-air and PiP size.

Seconded here,

Just got back from my first stream using the ATEM Mini Pro, and can confirm it's a relative hassle to be able to use a premultiplied alpha layover only through the software module. It'd be a great addition if the present 'Key'-button could also be used for a luma-key (such as overlay logo's made in Photoshop). Sounds like a great and achievable feature request to me!

Bumping this thread. It would be really usefull to be able to use the key-button for both luma and chroma.

Seconded/Thirded/whatever...

I found this post trying to figure out how to change the function. Makes no sense to me at all for the button to bring up Chroma.. It should toggle the key on/off with whatever settings you choose. Definitely feels like an incomplete feature to the point I was poking in the XML to figure out how to fix it!

Just bumping in on this.. Its the mini pro is such an awesome product but these little things are really inconvenient.. i don't want to always use my laptop to control simple setups i use these for.

I'd claim this is a defect (or at best a documentation defect!). The doco says on page 13 Using the Upstream Keyer -

This means you can tell ATEM Mini to make an input source’s background color invisible using the chroma keyer, or only use a specific section of a graphic using a luma or linear key. Linear keys are great for visual effects, titles and lower third graphics.

I went around in circles trying to stop this happening!

We just ran into this same issue––BM definitely needs to fix this in a software update by allowing the physical "Key" button to be mapped to DSK or Luma key instead of stuck to Chroma Key. I'd encourage you all to put in tickets or at least emails to make sure they receive this request.

BUT we found a usable workaround for the meantime. Here's what we did:
Set ATEM Mini in Atem Mini Setup to "Cut Bus"
Open Luma Key, adjust to correct angle (see my screenshot of our software control settings)
File > save startup state

We have our camera in Camera 1 and Propresenter in Camera 2. Luma Key set both settings to Camera 2. We can now press the "1" button twice on the switcher to turn Luma Key on or off.

For that "on" button to switch to chroma makes no sense to me either - it should just leave that setting alone - but sadly that is currently how it is rigged. I too would like to see that changed so it simply leaves the setting where it is.

Keeping this thread active, and hopefully turning some of it into actual action, I think it'd be best for us all to put in a feature request via email. I just did, let's hope they notice before our next shoots ;)

+1 for this thread and feature. Need to be able to set Key On button to Luma, not just Chroma. Please and thank you.

I saw there was an update for switchers (8.4). I'm not in the office and haven't been able to check it out yet (and I want to keep this thread alive).

I assume they didn't give ability to map Key button?

I also would like that the keo on and off button only does just on or off of the upstream keyer. I would love to be able to use it with Lumakey.

Would you be able to explain the theory behind this idea. I tried it and it does work because we can't have yet another computer in the tech dept. of our Church to operate the ATEM software.

Thanks

I also subscribe to the wish to change the function of the key button to the function "luma-key".

There is a comparable thread ("Mini Pro, Upstream Keyer - Luma & Key On/Off button behavior")

Bumping this as well.

Would specifically love a preference to choose which keyer the button controls since different users will have different needs.

Another bump on this one pretty please!!

I thought it was just me doing something wrong, every time it switch over to chroma, even though I have everything configured under Luma.

An option to choose which key (upstream/downstream) would be perfect too!

I hope Blackmagic read these threads!

Another bump on this, very silly that the Key button on the unit only does the chroma key.

Thanks

I can't think of a single legitimate reason why those buttons should ever change the configuration of the keyer, other than turning it on and off. If the user configures the keyer a certain way, presumably that is how the user wants it to work, so LEAVE IT ALONE and do what the button is supposed to do: turn it on and off, as already configured.

All that said, it seems wasteful to me that there are separate ON and OFF buttons for this. Why not just have one button to toggle the keyer on and off, and let us configure the other as AUTO or TIE for that keyer, or as an ON/OFF toggle for the other keyer?

Lots of rather curious design choices...

Just finding this out for myself. The function of the Key On/Off button rivals BMD's inclusion of the aviator's headset jack on the Studio Converter for camera intercom...

any chance in getting this done.. I'd love to use downstream keys, but I don't want to dedicate a laptop to controlling the atem mini.

Do you have an iPhone or iPad? If so, you can use my upcoming app, MixEffect, to conveniently access these buttons without having to use a laptop. This was one of the reasons why I developed the app in the first place, since I figured BM wasn't going to be allowing users to configure how the buttons worked on the Minis.

MixEffect is getting closer to release. You can try out the beta today via TestFlight: https://mixeffect.app
