Need a replacement...recommendation?

PostMon Feb 17, 2020 3:12 am

Hello,

My church is using a Roland V-440HD is a basic switcher between our presentation computer and a live camera. However, we need to upgrade to something better and smaller!. I was wondering if the ATEM mini could be a good replacement. The output goes to a projection system.

Thanks in advance.

maybe?

"better" in what way(s)?

It looks like the 440 has 8 inputs, but the mini has 4. Will 4 inputs be enough?

The 440 has several types of input connectors, but the mini only has HDMI - will all of your sources send HDMI, or ...?

Frank,

I need to double-check but I believe we'd only need two of the four inputs and I don't think that HDMI will be a problem. Appreciate the feedback!

You should also consider that the ATEM mini has no multi-viewer... but if you only have two sources, and one of those is a presentation computer then that might not be a concern for you?

Neil

I'm a little unfamiliar with the products and I wanted to make sure I wouldn't be wasting time or money.

Next thing to consider is that there is only one HDMI output, plus the USB-C webcam out, on the mini.

The webcam out is actually the "program" output on the mini, with the HDMI out being an aux out.

This means that if you are using the HDMI out to feed your projector or other output device(s), there is no option for a preview out either.

If you try to rig the webcam out through a second computer to feed the projector, it will add some latency and there will be some loss of quality from the compression in the signal that was meant mainly for live streaming... though in exchange you could reconfigure the HDMI out to function as a preview out.

Based on my experience, this part could be a problem. Still looking for a solution to get our ATEM Mini to talk to our projector.

Update to my previous comment:

We used a Decimator MD-HX to convert the ATEM Mini's YUV output back to RGB so the projector could see it.
