IMAG Delay using BM Studio Cameras

PostThu Mar 26, 2020 4:46 pm

We're a church looking to get a couple of Blackmagic Studio Camera 4Ks to replace our current Panasonic HC-X1s. We currently have almost a 200ms delay from what we're seeing live on stage to what is projected on the screens. We're already using a BM ATEM Production Studio 4K and I've confirmed there's no delay between camera and the projector. The delay is in the internal processing of the Panasonic cameras themselves. My question is, if we went with the BM Studio 4K cameras (or just HD cameras), how much delay, if any, would we experience? Has anyone else had any experience with this? Thanks.

Hello Jason. The Television Studio 4K is less than a frame from optical to SDI out. The ATEM Production Studio 4K processing is about 4 lines. If you do not reference the camera, the camera to ATEM delay will vary between 4 lines to a frame. That alone is quite acceptable unless your imag adds delay. Any scaling of the image will add 1-2 frames of delay so it's best to stay at native resolutions. If you use the Studio 4K, you should set the camera reference to Program from the ATEM feeding back. Then set the Line timing to -5 which will time the camera ahead of the ATEM. This will insure the camera will always go through the ATEM at 4 lines. This will give you from optical to ATEM SDI out at less than a frame. Difficult to do any better than this.
