ATEM mini and microphones

PostThu May 14, 2020 9:53 am

Hi,
I’m having a few (beginners) issues with the microphone setup for my Mini. I currently have the P4k and a laptop feeding in and this works fine (I have a lecturer green-screened and speaking to Keynote slides with an overlay title from the Media).

In terms of audio I have:
Rode lav (XLR)
Rode videomic pro+ (3.5mm)
Rode NT1 (part of the AI1 kit) (XLR)

If I plug the videomic pro+ into the Mini it sounds dreadful (lots of hiss). So currently I plug the Pro+ into the P4k add the 20 gain and that works.

But is it the best solution?
Any suggestions much appreciated.
Tim

ps I’m amazed at the power and simplicity of the Mini - a super little device for the things I’m looking to do.

Did you check your mic-in settings where you can select "linein" vs. "mic"?

Thanks.
Will set it up later today and test.
Edit - how do you switch?!

But, connecting your mic to the camera is best, as the Mini needs a Mic Preamp between the mic and switcher, and unless the mixer can add audio delay, yiur video and audio will be out of sync. Connecting the Mic to the camera solves both, audio is in sync. Try keeping camera audio to around 50 or less.

Depending on what type of audio you want to record at least some consumer camera preamps can compress your audio to much. For example a rockband on high volume could result in pumping audio.

True, but I was thinking more of vocal audio, as the OP is recording a human presenter doing a lecture.
My responses are tailored to what what the OP is asking or trying to accomplish. ;)

Another way to go, which I’m doing for music livestreams, is to get an HDMI audio inserter and insert your audio into the HDMI before it gets to the ATEM. This way you can keep the audio with the video if you use AFV but you avoid the camera preamp (and most are not so great). I’m not having any out-of-sync issues with this approach.

Yes, that would work also, and also external preamps that bypass the camera.

2xbass what kind of inserter are you using?

We have had a terrible time getting decent audio into the ATEM mini pro from our Yamaha LS-9 mixer. The sound is muddy and just doesn't sound right regardless of our gain settings or effects.

We've ordered a gofanco Prophecy 4K 60Hz HDMI Audio Extractor & Embedder to give it a shot.

This one: https://www.sescom.com/products/view/pr ... o-inserter. I think I got it from Adorama. There is a cheaper Monoprice one I saw on Amazon but I think thought this one would be better. We are using a Zoom Livetrak L-12 mixer and we were taking one of the headphone outputs from that and going into the HDMI inserter and it worked great.
