Best video format ATEM system

PostFri May 29, 2020 4:40 pm

Hello, I hope you could help me...

I use the ATEM Television Studio HD for my livestreams. As capture card I use the Ultrastudio Mini Recorder, to take the PGM out of the ATEM into my Macbook to record or stream. The ATEM is known for the fact that it cannot convert any video format, so every device should use the same. Now is my question: what video format would be the 'best' to use?

Why is there an option to put the ATEM in interlace mode? I don't think anyone would use that in 2020? Or am I wrong?
I was thinking 1080p would be the best. However, the ATEM won't see my camera's (Panasonic GH4 and a Sony) when it's set at 1080 25p. The only solution that seems left is 1080 50p. But that's a video format my Mini Recorder can't handle. So I cannot record or stream the PGM this way...

What would be the best solution according to you? I could buy a web presenter that can handle 1080 50p, but then I should always shoot in 50p... There must be another option. Let me know.

Thank you! :D

If it is possible to set your cameras to capture and record internally at 1080p25, but output 1080i50 over HDMI, then I would probably do that and set the ATEM video standard to 1080i50. This format is well supported by the UltraStudio Mini Recorder, and while you will have to de-interlace this format in your streaming software to convert it back to 1080p25, it is possible to do so cleanly (without any loss of video quality) provided that the original in-camera capture format was 1080p25.

If it is not possible to output 1080i from your cameras while capturing at 1080p25 internally, then I would probably set all the cameras and ATEM video standard to 1080p50. And then get a Mini Converter UpDownCross HD to put between the ATEM's video output and the UltraStudio Mini Recorder. The UpDownCross HD will allow you to convert from 1080p50 to 1080p25 which is a format that the Mini Recorder can accept.

So you would always deinterlace for online streaming?

1080i is supported as a lot of linier tv boradcast is still requires it, though if you are only producing content for online use, 1080p is generally the prefered format.

The Panasonic GH4 HDMI output resolutions for streaming progressive include:
PANASONIC GH4 SUPPORTED STREAMING RESOLUTIONS
1080i 50/59.94/60
1080p 23.98/24/25/30

The GH4 does not output a 1080p50/60 signal. Connect the cameras to a monitor and check what they are actually putting out their respective HDMI port.

Try setting the ATEM for 1080p30, and set the camera HDMI output resolution to 1080p30 and see if that works. The 1080p25 resolution can be problematic.

Not sure where you copied that information from, but the GH4 can definitely both record internally and output a 1080p60 over HDMI. And it can output a 2160p signal up to 30 fps over HDMI as well. It also has a 4K Down Convert setting for the HDMI output to output a 1080p signal when recording 4K internally.

There is a list of supported output resolutions and frame rates here:
https://www.atomos.com/cameras/panasonic-dmc-gh4

The biggest limitation on the GH4 HDMI output, is that while it is capable of outputting a 10-bit 4:2:2 signal externally over HDMI, it cannot do so while also recording internally. If recording internally, then the HDMI output format is limited to 8-bit.
