Ultrastudio Recorder 3G - Thunderbolt 2??

PostFri Aug 28, 2020 12:27 am

Is there an adapter we can use to purchase a 3G and use it with a Thunderbolt 2 equipped PC?

Thanks!

Best,

David

Apple makes a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, but I am not sure whether it will work with the UltraStudio Recorder 3G.

From a bandwidth standpoint, the 20 Gbps of Thunderbolt 2 should be more than sufficient for 1080p60 video capture.

The issue is that bus-powered Thunderbolt devices are not always compatible with the Thunderbolt adapter. This is partly because the power delivery specifications for Thunderbolt 2 are lower than for Thunderbolt 3 ports.

For example, the bus-powered Thunderbolt 3 UltraStudio HD Mini did not work with the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter directly, but some people did have success when using it connected to a Thunderbolt 3 docking station (with external power supply) as described in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=58680

So I'm not totally sure about the new UltraStudio 3G models. If they have lower power consumption than the UltraStudio HD (which seems possible given that don't have a fan and are much more limited in terms of ports and features), then they might work directly with the adapter. But it's hard to say definitively until someone has tried it.

In general if the device is using the Thunderbolt port for power as well as data transfer, it won't work because the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapters don't supply bus power.

The Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter is bi-directional from a data standpoint. But since the adapter evidently doesn't provide bus power (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266), you would need to use the adapter in conjunction with an externally powered Thunderbolt 3 dock in order to be able to use bus-powered Thunderbolt 3 devices on a computer with a Thunderbolt 2 port.

This kind of setup is described in this article:
https://www.macworld.com/article/353012 ... n-any.html

This matches what people encountered in the earlier thread regarding the bus-powered Thunderbolt 3 UltraStudio HD Mini. Which means that the bus-powered UltraStudio Recorder 3G would need a similar setup to work.

I use the Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter to connect the old (thunderbolt2) Ultrastudio mini recorder/monitor to a thunderbolt 3 macbook pro 15" 2018. It provides power and data.

I just don't know if it still work in the other way with the new Ultrastudio monitor/recorder 3G. Yes the only bi-directional adapter is the one from Apple. I think it should work because the amount of bus power required must be about the same in the old and new Ultrastudios.
