Hyperdeck Approved Media

PostTue Oct 27, 2020 9:40 pm

Are there any plans to update the Hyperdeck approved media list? 45 of the 49 drives on the list are discontinued, The four that aren't discontinued are overly expensive.

Nowhere in the manual or website are the needed specs for Hyperdeck SSDs.

This is the latest list of HyperDeck recommended SSDs: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/23730

I have had pretty good luck with the Samsung 860 EVO drives which are available in sizes from 250GB up to 4TB and are included on the recommended list (all sizes but the 500GB model for some reason). These drives are still widely available last I checked and are relatively reasonably priced.

The Samsung 860 Pro drives are good as well, although they tend to be more expensive.

Yes, that is the current but outdated list. Only 4 of those drives are still in production. A very few seem to have new model numbers, which means that they are not approved.

The part number for the Samsung EVO drives mentioned is not the same as the ones currently available. If the new part number is approved, the list needs to reflect that.

If we use non approved drives and have a failure, that causes liable issues for us.

Not exactly sure what you are referring to in terms of the product numbers for the Samsung 860 EVO drives.

The 2TB and 4TB models don't even mention a specific product number on the support list. And for the 250GB (MZ-76E250) and 1TB (MZ-76E1T0) models, as far as I can tell, these drives are still being sold at many retailers online.

Note that you may see a few additional letters appended to the end of the product number like BW or B/AM or E (for example, MZ-76E1T0BW or MZ-76E1T0E). These additional letters are merely used to designate different packaging and warranty regions for the drive, they don't actually designate a difference in the actual drive model hardware. The label on the back of the drive will show the model number MZ-76E1T0 without any additional letters.

The BW code means the drive ships in a retail box with worldwide warranty, B/AM means retail box for the Americas region, E means an OEM (usually white box) drive which may come without a warranty. This isn't a complete list though, there are a handful of different region or packaging-specific letter codes that Samsung uses.

This is obviously not an endorsement by BMD, but based on the fact that WD bought Sandisk, I bought a pile of WD Blue 1TB SSD assuming they were rebadged Sandisk units.

I have two 3G SDI Hyperdecks and 3 12G SDI Hyperdecks.

I can fill a 1TB WD Blue recording 1080p30 uncompressed without dropping a frame.

I can also fill a Blue at 4K 30 fps in ProRes HQ without dropping a frame.

They're all:

WD Blue 3D NAND SSD
WDS100T2B0A-00SM50
Built in either January, July or August 2020

My understanding is that the Western Digital Blue SSDs are essentially the same hardware as the SanDisk X400 drives, but with slightly newer firmware:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/we ... ,4767.html

The WD Blue/X400 drives use TLC NAND and a different disk controller from the older SanDisk Extreme Pro SSDs (on the HyperDeck media list) which used MLC NAND. So you wouldn't be able to extrapolate much from any tests of the MLC-based SanDisk drives.

Having said that, the WD Blue SSDs perform well according to the drive support list Atomos publishes for their recorders and should be capable of ProRes 422HQ recording up to 4K 60fps. So I'm not surprised to hear that they do well in the HyperDeck recorders as well.

I'm a bit disappointed that they're rebadged X400 drives, though I'm not surprised. They have been very reliable with the HyperDecks, and record uncompressed 1080p no problem, but I have bought some:

SAMSUNG 860 EVO Series 2.5" 1TB SATA III V-NAND 3-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-76E1T0B/AM

As someone else pointed out, the model number is MZ-76E1T0, the "B/AM" is regional packaging and warranty information.

As far as I can tell from my research these are the only two (in 1TB) that are still being manufactured:

Samsung 860 EVO V-NAND 1TB (Model: MZ-76E1T0)
Samsung 860 PRO V-NAND 1TB (Model: MZ-76P1T0)

and I don't think they are long for this world as they have been replaced with the 870 series.

some readings point issues with large datas exceding cache capacity (size or Intelligent Turbo Write algorythm ?).
Evo plus or 980 have better feedback, so with adapter ?
May crucial or wd be also an alternative ?
