Zoom/Skype integration with live production?

PostWed Oct 28, 2020 4:55 pm

I was chatting with someone yesterday who asked if I had the capability to integrate Zoom/Skype participants into a live production feed. I believe this is possible but I'm not sure about the technical aspects of doing this.

My flight case currently has a 1 M/E, HyperDeck Studio 12G and a 12x12 Hub. I have a HyperDeck Studio Mini for loading graphics and clips as well as a Decimator MD-HX for tying in a laptop or other source. Live streaming is currently going through a Teradek VidiU Go to their Core cloud platform. I have mainly been recording/streaming live theatre performances with this setup so this request would be a step above.

I do not yet have full details so, I'm just digging around this morning for a little info. Additional hardware that may be required, technical issues/challenges/pitfalls, integration methods, etc.

Any input would be appreciated.

Prior to COVID we produced belly Dance events and our big annual event was last June. So I had to figure out how to put it online and Zoom was my best option. I had to be able to have live dancers and live music be performed together in real time. Then be able to add lower thirds and titles. So this is what I did.
    • Zoom turned on dual monitors and disabled all audio processing.

    • Enabled HD (every person signed in must also enable HD)

    • Placed Zoom output on second screen and had Zoom screen with controls on first screen (ensured mirror screen was not selected)

    • The second screen was a ‘virtual screen’ as I connected from my iMac straight to an HDMI input on my Atem TVS HD.

    • I have second laptop connected to TVS HD for Lower Thirds (here2record app)

    • Third Laptop connected using ‘virtual second screen’, which is connected directly to my switcher, with the presenter app to play all videos with no UI elements and have control.

    • Of course my Bmpcc4K connected to an input for my video.

    • The program out of my TVS HD goes to my UltraStudio Mini HD and from there I go back to my original, iMac that is running the zoom call and select the Ultrastudio as my camera. So I am sending Zoom to my switcher and adding whatever production to it and sending it back to zoom as my webcam.

    • I used obs.ninja (on the same computer I was playing the videos from) to capture the remote feeds of the band that were in a different city. This way they would be outside of the Zoom call and I could do PIP with them and the Zoom participants.

    • In zoom the important thing I realized is you have to have a minimum of three accounts signed in with video (video does not need to be enabled). If you do not do this you cannot spotlight the video to the second screen. So whoever you want to be seen you would right click on there screen and spotlight video to the second screen. You want to spotlight to the second screen so you have a clean feed with no zoom controls.

    • Important In the zoom call you will have your personal screen. DO NOT spotlight that screen or you will get video feedback and the image will burn in.

This is how I did it... could be all messed up, but hope it helps.

Thanks for the input. Did you manage all of that on your own? How were you getting the remote feeds outside of Zoom?

Understanding the concepts but I'll need to play around with all of it. For hardware, I'd need to pick up the Ultrastudio Mini and figure out where to get two more laptops/computers. A couple of Mac Minis should work, yes?

Feels like a lot to get my head around. Hoping it's something I can tackle as I don't really want to turn down any work right now.

Ah. Roman, thank you for that. It's helpful. The projection of the attendees is a nice touch. I like that. I will take a look at your video to see what else I can learn.

I've been noodling a bit more on this today. Came across a video from here2record that mentioned the Web Presenter for this purpose. I happen to have one that's just been sitting on the shelf collecting dust.

Since I'm a one man band, at a basic level, I could use a Decimator, Web Presenter, Hyperdeck Mini (for recording), a camera, a wireless lav and a single laptop connected to Zoom. Moving forward, the addition of the Ultrastudio and another laptop (or two), would allow me to do quite a bit more.

Appreciate all the info. Trying to soak it all up.

Re: Zoom/Skype integration with live production?

It's been awhile since I've originally posted this but I have a meeting with a potential corporate client tomorrow to discuss this idea.

The past few days, I've been running some tests in my office. I have everything running into my flight case as I would for something live. Program out from my ATEM 1 M/E is going into a Web Presenter. Web Presenter is connected via USB to my main MacBook Pro.

Back up MacBook Pro is connected to flight case network and running ATEM Software Control.

Main MacBook Pro is running OBS. OBS is configured to use Web Presenter as a video source and an audio source. Wireless mic packs go into a X32 rack which has main outs connecting to ATEM. Virtual camera is running in OBS.

Zoom is also running on the main MacBook Pro and using the Web Presenter for the audio feed. Camera feed is coming from OBS.

This all works very well. I ran into a few audio issues last night but I seem to have them dialed with a few compressor and eq tweaks on the X32. Flight case fans are silly loud.

What I am now trying to figure out is how to bring remote callers into the feed? The potential client I'm speaking with tomorrow would like me to cover a corporate awards ceremony. How would I highlight someone as they are being announced to receive an award? It'd be nice to have them PiP in the corner. Can I do that with what I have? I'm going to load up some lower thirds graphics either in the ATEM or OBS but I still need to play with that.

As always, any input is appreciated.

Ok. So I can use a Decimator box from my main laptop to connect to ATEM which routes the second Zoom monitor as a camera feed?

Hmm. I did not set up a mix minus yesterday or today while I was testing. That would probably be the source of the weird background echo undertone? Should I be outputting the audio from my laptop with Zoom into the mixer? I have a general grasp of the concept but it isn't something I've setup before.

Appreciate your help Roman. Thanks.

Roman, I just wanted to come back to this and thank you again. I think I have this mostly figured out. At least on my X32.

Mic inputs all go to a single bus. The bus is routed to an aux out that goes back into the laptop's mic input. Laptop audio out is on a separate input that is only routed to main out for the program feed. So far, it appears to be working as it should.

Playing with the video side now.

Learned a few new things today so, it was a good day.

Thanks again.
