No image in Atem MINI Pro w/GoPro or a6400

PostTue Jan 12, 2021 12:33 am

I have used my Atem Mini Pro in order to stream and record using my Macbook camera and another computer for presentations.
I bought a Go Pro Camera and a Sony a6400 which I connected to my Atem Mini Pro but no image is shown. Do I need to buy a converter? Is there a specific setting to be used?

Thanks for your help

I personally have both a Sony a6400 and a really old GoPro (Hero3) that both work with my Atem Mini PRO ISO.

If you have no image, it is probably something simple just overlooked. So I'd check over all the basics to look for "obvious mistakes":
  • Does the a6400 have an image on its own screen? ie: You are sure it has power, lens cap off, exposure is reasonable, etc.
  • Does the a6400 HDMI out work if plugged directly into your monitor or TV? (Proving a6400 HDMI works)
  • If it works on another monitor/tv, you know that piece of the puzzle is ok. Now plug into the Atem. Double check which channel you plugged it into (1-4). Double check that channel is activated and that FTB (Fade to black) is NOT activated).
  • As a quick check on the output of the Atem, I often set it to "M/V" (Multiview) instead of "Pgm" (Program) as it will show the multiview screen elements even if all sources are black. Then you should know the Atem output is working with your monitor/TV.
  • Also if you have played around with the Atem control software, check that you don't have any weird feature enabled for the upstream or downstream keyers.
  • If you used the Atem control software, there is the option to "Clear Startup State" to clear any customizations and then power cycle the device to start fresh with default settings.

Check each piece of your setup one-by-one as above and you should be able to isolate the issue! Could be camera, could be cable from camera to atem, could be atem settings, could be cable from atem to monitor/tv, could be monitor/tv. Must test each piece.

Thanks Ben.
I have checked your first three items.
Everything is working fine. I can see the image of the a6400 output when connected to a monitor or a tv screen.

I also checked that the Atem mini Pro is working fine since I can connect computers and I see their output (BTW, Atem mini is connected to a Blackmagic Design Video Assist Recording Monitor, which shows computer image but no image from either the camera or the GoPro).
I will check FTB.
I have not payed with the software since I want to use just the Atem Mini Pro as the hardware solution for streaming and recording (through the video assist).

Do you connect the a6400 (or the GoPro) to the Atem mini with a micro HDMI adapter o just a cable? Is it a very premium cable or something?

Thanks a lot for your help.

The Micro HDMI is an output connection, not an input. You need to use the full HDMI type A connection on the ATEM Mini, for signal inputs. Also, camera has to be set for progressive output, not interlace.

Make sure the HDMI output is set for 1080p and NOT 4k

Thanks a lot to all of you for taking the time to answer.

Everything is working well now.

The problem was that I was using a Micro HDMI adapter as an output from the camera and then a HDMI - HDMI cable from there. I changed that to a Micro HDMI (Camera) to HDMI (AMPro) and now it works.

The adapter was good enough to use with a TV (from camera to tv) but not with the AMPro.

Thanks again.
