Remote control ATEM Mini Pro

PostTue Jan 12, 2021 8:14 pm

Hi
So we have a client with one ATEM mini pro and likely to grow to more, I need to support them with controlling the units remotely to help them set up PIP and audio etc and then leave them to their transmission. So the question is if I know the IP address of the unit, can I control the unit as if it were on my network?
Thanks in advance
Tim

Normally the IP address of the Atem will be an "internal" private IP within the client's network.
  • For home users this is often starting with 192.168.X.X which is not accessible from the internet.
  • For enterprise networks this is often 10.X.X.X which is also internal not accessible from the internet.

So you need a way to bridge the client's network with your network. For most businesses this is accomplished with a VPN (Virtual Private Network). When you connect to a VPN, it allows you to participate in the private network from a remote location.

You can buy routers with built-in VPN servers (cheaper consumer ones usually only support 1 or a few concurrent VPN sessions, more expensive enterprise ones can scale up to more concurrent sessions and features).

For example, trying search for "OpenVPN router" to look for products that have the free OpenVPN software built in. You can also host OpenVPN on many other appliances like a Synology NAS (and probably QNAP NAS - I just personally have Synology).

Hopefully that gets you started...
