2 Fiber Sends

PostMon Apr 05, 2021 9:28 pm

Without using 2 BM fiber converters is it possible to send 2 signals from one converter? Instead of send/receive like their current SDI-Fiber converters I'm looking for a send/send.

This past weekend I had a production that needed to send me key/fill to 2 channels on my switcher over a long distance.

Any help would be appreciated!

Best,

David

ebay china exports have many products that do this with all the usual caveats
Some of these examples will also pass MADI over SM Fibre btw.

The AJA Fido series has a 2 channel unit thats sends both channels in the same direction (Fido-2T and 2R) if you need an off-the-shelf solution. Hard to beat the price of multiple BMD units though, if you don't mind using a fiber core per video signal. BTW, nothing says you have to connect both fibers on a BMD unit if you only need one direction...

There are a multitude of muxed fiber devices that combine many channels going both directions into a single fiber core if needed. We build to order a lot of multichannel systems, limit of capability is usually your checkbook. :-)

Thanks Greg!

I agree with you that I don't have to use both send and receive on the fiber. Maybe you can answer - would an AJA 2T work with an ATEM Talkback Converter?

I can certainly get (2) BM devices and I'd probably velcro them together but the AJA is a cleaner solution for sure.

Best,

David

The multipart answer is maybe, but... The default SFP for the Fido are 1310nm, the same wavelength that BMD uses in everything. The FIDO is also a straight SDI to Optical with no special conversion, also like the BMD devices. But the TB converter has a send/receive setup on the fiber pair, which will only work one way with a FIDO 2T/2R dependent on which way the signal is going. Assuming the AJA/BMD play, you could send 2 vids from a FIDO-2T into 2 receive channels of the TB converter. Lot of assumption there, but it will probably work, I've mix/matched BMD gear to lots of other things.

I may be trying to solve a problem I don't need to solve. The cost and effort may not be worth it in the long run. In all the productions I've done this is the first time where I've had a graphics person running Pro Presenter that wanted to be in the live room vs just using a program feed on a monitor but I never like to tell my clients "no".

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Best,

David

well only you can answer the problem/not problem question :-)

These type of scenarios are exactly why we build our fiber sets as "generic". They might get used for interview with mic/ifb one show, then on to a group of remote cameras with coms, then maybe a remote graphics room to satisfy human distancing-a very high priority lately. Having a stack of units with multiple SDI and a managed switch that runs on 1 or 2 fiber cores makes the "how do we do this this week" a total non-issue for us.

I agree with Greg,

We have multiple SDI Fiber muxers in our setups.. Everywhere we have some in and outputs we place a Mux or MiniMux and have acces to Network, 12G SDI multiple channels.. It really makes all setups flexibel as we can just run almost any signal trough fiber to another set or station.. :)
