ATEM Mini Pro - Keying two signals

PostMon May 03, 2021 3:33 pm

I am setting up a small streaming studio and am wondering,
if the ATEM Mini Pro (or other versions) can do a croma key for two signals at a time?
My dealer could not anser that question...

Nope. The only way to chroma two signals would be to mix the two signals before you plug them into the Mini. It's on my wish list too.

There are upstream keys, which are generally text overlaid on the video (like a lower third), but I don't think that's what you're talking about.

Can I switch forth and back on the ATEM between two cameras with green background, so that the ATEM will only have to key one signal at a time? I never need both signals at a time. Just one of them on the program out.

That is incorrect. The USKs are where the chroma key magic happens, DSKs are almost always graphics.

Yes.

Sorry, I WAS wrong--downstream keys are the lower thirds and graphics and upstream keys is where chromakeying happens.

Still, I believe I'm correct that you cannot toggle back and forth from, say, input 1 to input 2 and have them both chromakeyed. If you figure that out, I'd love to know how it's done.

You CAN switch the keying source (e.g. key camera 2 instead of camera 1) but it's not something you can do during a live production to my understanding. I'm certainly no expert.

I believe you COULD daisy chain two ATEMS, however, and output the first one into input 1 on the second one. This would give you four cameras that you could then key. I've thought about that but I haven't found a need for that that is worth the extra expense.

Good luck!

Actually, you don't need to daisy-chain two ATEMs, just get a cheap ($15??) HDMI switcher. Plug all your sources into that and then feed it into Input 1 on the ATEM. Problem solved for under $50!!

Thanks for the input and the very clever HDMI switch idea!
