recommendations for ATEM mixer for small/medium size church

PostMon Jun 14, 2021 4:37 pm

Looking for recommendations. Small to medium size church -up to 300 congregation. Wanting to upgrade live streaming capability. Currently 1 camera - but planning to expand with at leas an additional PTZ mounted & one mobile. Appreciate suggestions. Could also plan for more expansion in future so possibly one of the 2 new ATEM mixers would not be out of the question. Local High School has the ATEM MINI Pro & a really good IT tech - his productions look really professions.

For your size, I would look at, like you said, one of the new ATEM Mini Pro or Extreme models. If your PTZ cameras have SDI, I would use that over HDMI outs, and just get a SDI to HDMI converter for the switcher end. SDI gets you longer and more reliable cable runs than HDMI.

One thing to consider is if you want lyrics or slides on your screen. Look at the whole of what you want to achieve and build around that, leaving room for expansion.

Adding to Micah's comments,

Consider also if you want an HDMI feed from the mixer, for instance to go to an in church screen or projector. (In particular is it important to come from the mixer rather than a separate computer?)

The Mini Pro models only have one HDMI out, which you can use to show one of the inputs, the program out or the Multiview. The multiview is very handy as it shows Program and Preview and all the channels. So if you want to put the Multiview on a screen for the operator you can't then feed anything elsewhere. It is possible to monitor the program out (only) using the Mini Pro acting as a web cam for an attached computer, so you are not working entirely blind if you can't use the multiview.

The Extreme models have two outputs that can be assigned individually, so you could have a mutiview and program, or a particular input. You also get a lot more buttons which let you control things just using the panel rather than relying on the control software on a computer. There are eight inputs rather than the four of the lower models. The Extreme models are more expensive but the extra flexibility may be worth it.

Regards,

Tim
