ATEM Mini webcam unreliable

I've been struggling with getting consistent, reliable operation from my ATEM mini when using it as a webcam. Sometimes I just get a black screen. Sometimes it just works. Sometimes with the black screen if I momentarily switch to another webcam going into another USB port and then switch back to the ATEM mini, I get the image. This is happening on Mac OS 10.15 and 11.x. ATEM Mini software version is 8.6.

I've changed cables to no avail. I'm now experimenting with letting the Mini "warm up" before attempting to use it. I somehow got the impression that this helps, but I'm skeptical. Any ideas? Thanks.

Are you using a good quality USB-C cable?

Cheap phone charging cables don't work.
Thunderbolt cables don't work.
Webcam mode only needs USB2.0 cable but spec sheet says USB3.1 Gen 1. Generally those higher spec cables don't cost much.

Yes I bought a USB3.1 Gen 1 cable and still having trouble. I'm now thinking that the device needs repair.

On my Windows machine I find it best to connect the ATEM to the machine and turn the ATEM on after the computer is fully ready.

Hope that helps a bit
