BMD-SMARTVIEW4K "flashing" on source switch

PostTue Jul 27, 2021 5:23 pm

We have been tracking a issue with the BMD-SMARTVIEW4K where when we switch between sources, the BMD-SMARTVIEW4K will "flash".

After some time put in by our hardware engineering group, it has come to our attention that it seems like the BMD-SMARTVIEW4K doesn't seem to implement RP168 properly (or at least completely) and that is what is causing the issue.

In a "normal" 1920x1080 frame, the number of pixels per line is 2200. If the user switches to another source and line 7 isn't equal to 2200 pixels the monitor doesn't seem to track properly, which it should do if we're within the allotted switching area. The result is that the monitor "flashes" while it tries to sync back up.

We narrowed it down to the monitor by using a Phabrix SxE to generate a 1080p59.94 signal to the monitor. We then used a feature of the Phabrix called generate switch line event. The way this sends an event is by corrupting the CRC, so not actually changing the number of pixels per line
BMD monitor was happy, but if the number of pixels in the line changed (which is allowed by spec,) the monitor would flash.
