Web Presenter HD - Speed test to check cache issues?

PostThu Oct 07, 2021 12:21 am

Our church has been using a Web Presenter HD to stream our services to Restream.io for several months. Love the workflow and the integration with our ATEM switcher and our Hyperdeck. But, recently, we have had some cache issues with the device.

When we first got it, we were streaming at Hyperdeck Medium and the cache would stay around 10%. But now, we are having to lower to Livestream Medium and even Livestream Low just to keep the cache from maxing out. (I have no idea what the quality of those settings are; why don't the just give you the bitrate information instead of cryptic terms?)

Our PCs on the same switch are getting consistent 1 Gbps download and 100+ Mbps upload speeds. (For the record, we are anxiously waiting to get on fiber but they haven't run it to our church yet. That will solve a lot of our problems).

Is there any way to get a speed test of the actual encoder? I'm not sure what the issue is because our internet connection works great on the computers, but either the encoder is having an issue getting the signal our or Restream is being slow to receive it on their end, causing a backup (if that's even possible).

Cache fills due to Latency issues on the line.. It doesn't matter if you have 10 mbit or 1000mbit upload speed.

Latency can be caused by a lot of things.. But often your internal network has to do with it.. Separate your stream line to have a direct connection to the internet modem.

Dont just plug it into your existing network..

Can you elaborate on this? Networking is one of my weakest areas.

Do you mean we should run a completely separate network just for the stream? Currently we are using a switch and everything is plugged directly into it on the same network.

Yeah exactly.. Because your Atem Control protocol, and a lot of other traffic will cause the stream to wait every now and then because of all the traffic in your network This is how Cache fills up..

The Current network i'm streaming a big live event from has a 20ms latency.

My cache on both webpresenter HD's is 3% and i'm running HIGH at 12Mbit/s on both units!!

go to http://www.speedof.me and run the test.

I have a seprate VLAN for all my cameras etc; you advise to create an extra VLAN to the webpresenter; is it okay to use the same switches but adhere a VLAN to specific ports of a switch if possible.
