Streaming to Limelight RTMP slot from Web Presenter 4K

PostSat Oct 23, 2021 11:17 am

Hi there!

We are attempting to help a client who has a Web Presenter 4K to stream to a Limelight RTMP FHD slot.

Has anyone had experience with this combination or with a similar model?

Limelight slots require credentials and we've tried about 15 different custom XML files with the credentials section and also with a URL that includes the necessary authentication that we got from Limelight. Unfortunately none of this has worked.

On the Limelight side there are several options too. We have most recently rebuilt the slot with Limelight handling time codes and chunk size instead of relying on the encoder to do this. Alas, this didn't help either. Unfortunately both Limelight support and Blackmagic support have said since this is a custom / non-standard combination to both of them they are unable to help any further. Blackmagic suggested I ask here :)

Even if you haven't had luck with this specific combination, is anyone able to advise if the Web Presenter 4K is capable of handling the time coding / chunk size? If so, what size is it setting the chunks and is there a way to modify it? Finally, if anyone has a XML file with custom config that works to one of the other big CDNs e.g. Akamai, Cloudflare etc. that would be great also so we can attempt to match it up to Limelight.

Many thanks!

My guess is that this is probably an RTMP authentication issue, as various CDNs have different approaches regarding authentication and this has caused problems for people using the ATEM Mini in the past (which has a very similar streaming engine internally to the Web Presenter 4K and HD):

Note that this post from the FFmpeg mailing list suggests that Limelight networks uses their own custom RTMP authentication approach that is different from Adobe-style authentication (which is the most common approach): http://ffmpeg.org/pipermail/ffmpeg-cvsl ... 58791.html

If this is still the case, then it is possible that the Web Presenter does not support the form of authentication that Limelight requires for their incoming RTMP streams.

This post (for a different streaming encoder) also suggests that some tweaks the URL format may be necessary for Limelight as well: https://support.teradek.com/hc/en-us/ar ... t-Networks

If you want to troubleshoot this further, you might try running a packet analyzer like Wireshark on your local network so that you can see what the actual packets are that are being sent from the encoder to the CDN and what responses are coming back. This might help determine whether the problem is with RTMP authentication or some other issue. For example, you could be wasting your time messing around with chunk sizes, if the problem is actually authentication-related.
