BiDirectional 3G's overheating

Hi,

Has anyone experienced Micro Converter BiDirectional SDI/HDMI 3G failing due to overheating?

Today we had two of them fail during a live production. One just completely went dark/black. The other one was blinking signal after having run around 30 minutes just fine. Both of them were extremely hot to the touch. Almost could't hold them in my hand. I unplugged the flickering unit and it seemed like it restored normal operation.

Am I the only one?

Peter

Never had this problem with the Bidirectional 3G converter. In the past BM converters were getting very hot but the new models are okay.

Mine got warm but not hot and work as charm. Just an idea: Which power supply do you use? :?:

I'm using the PSU which was included with converter.

Best regards

I'm using the factory-supplied PSU's as well. I do believe I got a hold of the very first batch of units when they came out. Maybe that has something to do with it...

We have done over 25 livestreams, some lasting an 1 1/2 hrs using a bi-directional converter between a G1 cam and ATEM Mini Pro ISO. No heating or shut down problems. Using BM power supply.

Same. Usual usage is 1hr+ and they can get warm but nothing ridiculous to the touch.

Worth doing some testing on your units when not on a job.
I have had a few 10+ hour events with multiple BiDirectional 3G's and they have run fine.

Where do you have those converters when you are live streaming, in a closed rack or something like that?
None of mine are heating as such.

Hi there,
Yeah we have also overheating problems with the Bi-directional hdmi/sdi 3G converters. (ori power supply)
Super hot and stopt working at all. Trying to connect it with usb but only errors and telling me usb power to high: Current peak on the USB port, this device requires too much power....

Hello, is that first use (=brand new)? Or was it working fine before?

Best regards

I have 18 of the Bi-Directional Converters, and several of them over heat and stop working. I have factory power supplies as well as 3rd party. The condition ALWAYS follows the converter and is unrelated to which Power Supply I use. Prepping some factory returns as we speak...

We use SDI to HDMI 3D converters what we are using in virtual studio with Unreal. Converter with live masking is getting warmer and mask is not working correctly..we have to take power off and cool it down.. and do some magic mumbo jumbo to get it working again..

I'm coming on this page for the exact same problem, except it's not a "3G". Our "Bidirectional SDI/HDMI" MicroConverter gets really hot as soon as we plug it to its PSU (genuine). And yesterday it started failing: although the HDMI to SDI conversion was fine, the HDMI output went blank without a warning, and without the possibility to revive it.

Could a firmware update solve the issue? For Blackmagic folks, S/N is 5438662.

I just had one unit dying on set. I'm not even sure at what point. I was first using it in the morning just fine but it was getting hot. Then I plugged it again a few hours later and none of the LEDs turned on. I tried with multiple power supplies, cables, and computers but there is no life in the unit anymore.

Similar issue but with the 12G version. It abandonned ship on me mid-show last night and I could barely touch the unit, it was so hot! Came in today, jettisoned the crappy wall wart, threw another Bi-Directional Micro Convertor in and drew power from the USB port on the monitor that I was using it on for multiview. It's been on for just over two and a half hours now but it's throwing more heat than I'm comfortable with. We just happened to have Micro Convertors around but I have a replacement Teranex convertor from when we cooked the original one, which I think I'll try. I have to say though, I'm not impressed with the fail rate lately of our BMD products and we have three theatres full of the stuff!
