SDI/HDMI Cabling Advice Requested

PostWed Jan 05, 2022 10:10 pm

I'd appreciate any advice anyone can offer on the best way to connect three large screen TVs to the program output from our ATEM Mini Extreme ISO.

We use the ATEM Mini for live-streaming our church services and we currently display the live stream to the in-person congregation through an old VGA projector at the front and a 55" 4K monitor at the back of the church. We're now replacing the projector with two 75" 4K TV monitors at the front. The cable length to each of the front monitors is about 70 to 80 feet; we're planning to use 100-foot 3G-rated SDI cables. The cable length to the back monitor is about 10 feet.

The options I'm considering are either:

1. ATEM HDMI out to an HDMI 1x2 splitter
HDMI splitter output 1 to the back screen via HDMI cable
HDMI splitter output 2 to a Blackmagic Microconverter HDMI to SDI 3G ("HDMI2SDI-3G")
HDMI2SDI-3G output 1 to left front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI
HDMI2SDI-3G output 2 to right front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI

2. ATEM HDMI out to a Blackmagic Microconverter HDMI to SDI 3G ("HDMI2SDI-3G");
HDMI2SDI-3G out 1 to a Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#1") for the back screen
HDMI2SDI-3G out 2 to left front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#2")
SDI2HDMI#1 loop SDI out to the right front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#3")

3. ATEM HDMI out to a Blackmagic Microconverter HDMI to SDI 3G ("HDMI2SDI-3G");
HDMI2SDI-3G out 1 to a Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#1") for the back screen
SDI2HDMI#1 loop SDI out to left front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#2")
SDI2HDMI#2 loop SDI out to the right front screen Microconverter SDI to HDMI ("SDI2HDMI#3")

Concerns:

Option 1. Are there any reliable HDMI splitters that provide a strong enough signal for the HDMI to SDI conversion? I haven't had much success with splitters.

Option 2. Does it make sense to convert to SDI for a few feet and then back to HDMI in order to avoid splitting the HDMI signal up front?

Option 3. The total cable length is 106 feet to the left front screen, and 206 feet to the right front screen is 206 feet after looping through two SDI to HDMI converters. Is the right screen likely to have a poorer image than the left?

Any opinions as to which is the best approach?

Thanks,
Graeme

To make things simpler and possibly cheaper (and provided you're not exceeding 1080p@60Hz), you could negate all the SDI/HDMI splitting and conversion boxes and do it as HDMI over CAT5e/6 using an OREI HD14-EX165-K system consisting of one TX distribution box and 4 RX boxes for the monitors @ $175 excluding network cable.

1/ HDMI SPLITTER is NOWAY .. WHen u disconnect one HDMI cable (or turn off TV), u got HDMI resync on second output too (= 1-2 sec black) ..

2/ Thats ok for me ..

3/ thats Ok for me too ..

2 or 3 deppend what is better for your cabling ..

SDI cables are different .. U want 3G signal .. one cable can be used for 30 meters .. other for 150 meters .. Depend from quality (and price) of cable ..
Look in this table .. here is CANARE cables .. what max length, whats signal (1.5G, 3G, 12G) ,..

Make sure that you have amplification for your signal output (DA - distribution amplifier), and not just a plain splitter. Ideally, you will want the output signal to be as strong at each display as it would be if you were only connecting one.

Thanks LouisBacker. That looks like an interesting solution, but I can't find any reviews for it. Have you used the Orei 1x4 HDMI Extender Splitter? Reviews for the Orei basic splitter products are mixed.

Thanks for the responses Roman Pytkin Pekarek and Daryl Toops. I'm currently leaning toward option 2, to keep the maximum total cable distance for each monitor as low as possible. I'm assuming the Blackmagic HDMI to SDI converters don't need any additional signal amplification in that configuration.

This may seem like a relatively trivial issue, but none of us here are professional video engineers. Pulling the cables is going to be challenging enough that we don't want to have to do it more than once. I appreciate the advice.

Thanks

Why all these conversions and extra latency? Just buy a few fiber HDMI. I’m having cables with a length of 100 meters and can even get 200 meters when connecting them together with a BM BiDirectional converter.

In case anyone is interested, we finally installed and hooked up the TV monitors yesterday - things move slowly with all-volunteer projects. I chose option 2 and it works perfectly. Thanks again for all the responses.

I would be interested in a future update on how the congregation feels about the conversion from a projector to two 75" 4K TV monitors at the front. We are considering a similar change. How big was your old projector screen?
Thanks.
