Need to input 720 and output 720

PostThu Jan 13, 2022 6:27 pm

I'm using the ATEM Mini Pro to transfer some old 720x480 video tape. I need to input 720x480 and either output 720x480 or output it as 1080 with black bars on the sides with out any stretching of the 720x480 video.

I can't figure out how to do this. What am I missing?

In Settings/General/video I only have 1080 options.

The mini's do not support SD resolutions!! You need to upconvert it with something like a Teranex AV or Decimator MD-Cross (not even sure if they go that low.. ) ;)

Thanks but the Decimator MD-Cross are on at least a 2 month Back-order or more. Ouch.

Thank you Ian for the information & Lead. I like the control of settings.

What is not clear when I look at the on-line manual is what it does with the 720x480 3x4 format to 1080. Does it create Black bars on each side or does it stretch (distort) the 720 to fill the 1080 width?

Standard definition 720 X 480 digital video is not 720p it's 480i (usually from SD sources is interlaced).

720p is (in terms of digital video devices) is 1280*720.

The ATEM Mini series do not support standard definition inputs but they will take 720p.

They will accept 720p inputs but will always output 1080p; 720p input is always upscaled to 1080p and that is how it gets processed internally.

First: I want to thank everyone for their input.

Second: I spoke with the Client and they do not want the 3x4 image distorted by stretching to the 15x9 format.

Third:
1. After much research and calling Blackmagic tech support I found out BlackMagic does not have anything that will display a 720x480 without cropping or distorting it to a 1080... and didn't know anything that would.
2. I found a "ClearClick Video to Digital Converter 2.0" that I ordered and will try out.
3. I found a "gofanco Prophecy Multi Video Format to HDMI Scaler Converter – HDMI / Mini DP / VGA / CVBS / YPbPr, Upscale HDMI Output Up to 4K @30Hz, Frame Rate Conversion, VESA Resolutions, TAA Compliant" that is suppose to work, and I will try if the ClearClick fails.
4. If both fail... I'll be back to the old way of computer capture.

Hopes all this helps someone else.
Best Regards... Marv.
