Disk Speed Test with bigger file size?

PostFri Jan 21, 2022 11:00 pm

So, a lot of the lower end SSDs today use various forms of caching to improve their small file read/write speeds. But, when the cache is full, speeds can change dramatically. I'm finding that a drive that seems to report good read and write speeds with the Black Magic Disk Speed Test will fall flat on it's face when copying a large video file to it, either via a computer or in a continuous recording device.

I'm curious about how the Speed Test App can be changed to help weed out which drives are likely to fail for on site recording. I think we might need something in the ball park of 30GB stress levels rather than the current limit of 5GB?

Any thoughts?

I don't think Blackmagic Disk Speed Test can be configured to test larger than 5GB files, so you might want to check out AJA System Test (which can be configured for up to 16 GB files) or Crystal Disk Mark (which can do up to 64 GB segments):
