affordable lens for high school studio

PostThu May 26, 2022 4:08 pm

I run a morning news show for the high school I work at and I am going to buy 2 of the Blackmagic Design Studio Cameras 4k Pro. I need an affordable lens that will work for my needs. The cameras will stay put in the studio. I am not looking to move the cameras out of the studio. So I was thinking just a standard photo lens would work but because I am on a high school budget and already spending a lot on the camera body, I am hoping to not spend a lot on the lenses.
Please see my current set up in the photo.

For news you would want to use a zoom lens so you can re-frame properly when new anchors come on.
The lens you choose (if you go for a cheap one) is mostly going to be lacking in sharpness. Its easy to go for the cheap one, but unless your high budget nobody is going to care. In a normal case i would say invest in lens before the camera since that makes a big difference in the image, but any cheap lens will work. Since its news you don't have to worry about focus breathing, which is a plus.
Inside the box? I didn't know about any box...

The first I would be looking at is the Panasonic 14-140.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

I use these lenses with our GH5 bodies and they are a nice economy lens. I haven't tried it on the Studio Cam though.

I think the Panasonic lenses are quite nice. The 14-140 is not very fast though. If you have studio lights, probably won’t be a problem. I use the 12-35 and the 35-105 all the time works n the JVC ls300 and think it looks great.
