streaming duration limit

PostFri May 27, 2022 7:51 am

Hi, we want to use an Atem Mini ISO Extreme to stream 24/7 to twitch. Will there be limitations? Are test results available to confirm this?

I'm not aware of any stream duration limitations in the ATEM Mini, but note that Twitch has a maximum broadcast length of 48 hours (after which I believe Twitch will automatically end the stream): https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/broadc ... uage=en_US

The other thing to be aware of is that the ATEM Mini stream encoding does not really have any adaptive bitrate functionality. Which means that if the bandwidth of your internet connection fluctuates (even temporarily) the ATEM Mini streaming cache will start to fill up. At which point you may start to encounter stream stuttering and other visual quality problems. And once this happens, it can sometimes take a very long time (after the bandwidth dips have resolved themselves) for the cache to empty and the stream quality to return to normal.

For shorter duration streams, this may be less of a problem, but for very long duration streams, you will want to make sure that you have an internet connection with very consistent bandwidth, as the the longer you stream for, the greater the likelihood of some (even short-lived) bandwidth fluctuations.

Unfortunately many consumer-oriented (and even lower tier business-oriented) internet connections tend to have some kind of bandwidth sharing at various points in the network that can lead to bandwidth variations. It's often only if you step up to the higher end business fiber connections (which can be rather expensive) that you start to see more reliable and more consistent bandwidth.
