Recording h.264 codec on Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus

PostThu Jun 02, 2022 5:47 pm

When setting up my Hyperdeck Studio HD Plus to record, Prores works great but when I set it to any of the H.264 codecs I get "unsuitable codec" error message. Any comments?

Then likely your input is 1080 interlaced?? Interlaced and H264 on hyperdecks are not friends..

Thanks. I'm actually doing zoom recordings off a MacBook Pro via HDMI (didn't tell you all that) so I don't think the video is interlaced.

When H.264 recording was first added to the original HyperDeck Studio Mini in 2018, it only supported progressive frame rates up to 1080p60. But support for interlaced recording was eventually added in HyperDeck firmware 7.1 in April 2020 and this support should exist on the newer HyperDeck models as well.

There is still at least one limitation to the H.264 recording on the HyperDeck Studio HD Plus and HD Pro though, which is that it is limited to HD resolutions (1080 and below). To record in 4K (2160p) up to 30fps on those models, you need to use either ProRes or DNxHR as the record codec.

Note that the currently detected input resolution and frame rate should be displayed at the top of the LCD screen (assuming that the HyperDeck is in record mode).

I dont think a HD model will allow you even to see any 4K signal.. Not even 30P. ;)

@Roman, BMD had a long time it did not record Interlaced on the hyperdeck minis in H264.. And after an update 2/3 years ago it still wasnt flawless.. ;)

Yeah, I'm not entirely sure why they decided to name those products HD Plus and HD Pro, but they have 6G SDI inputs and accept 4K video signals up to 2160p30 (maybe the HD Plus means a bit more than HD). They can record and play back in 4K resolution, but only in ProRes and DNxHR as indicated on the Tech Specs page: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... s/W-HYD-12

The HyperDeck Studio HD Plus is actually pretty similar in features to the original 1/3rd rack width HyperDeck Studio Mini (which could also do 2160p30 in ProRes). And the $695 price is the same as the original HyperDeck Studio Mini as well.

It's only the new 1/3rd rack width HyperDeck Studio HD Mini that has 3G SDI ports and is actually limited to 1080p60 HD in all recording codecs. That's effectively a lower-tier entry level model (at $495) even though the size and form factor is the same as the original HyperDeck Studio Mini.

Yep, makes about as much sense as the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro which is way too big to fit inside any pocket that I have ever seen. Or calling it the Micro Converter 3G even though the original Micro Converter was also 3G SDI capable.

But, I've long since given up on trying to make sense of the Blackmagic naming conventions ...
